Chapter 8 - VERONICA LEARNED WHO HER FATHER WAS

Veronica did not believe us.
At first.
She stood in Mr. Keene's office staring at the DNA report.
“This is fake.”
“No,” Sarah said gently.
“My father is Richard Shaw.”
“The man who raised you is Richard Shaw.”
Veronica looked at me with pure anger.
“You did this.”
That was so irrational I almost admired it.
“I did not retroactively alter your DNA.”
“Don't be sarcastic.”
“Then don't blame me for your father's secrets.”
Her face crumpled.
Gavin sat across the room.
He looked destroyed too.
Their history had been tangled before any of us understood it.
Veronica whispered:
“Lucas knew?”
“We don't know.”
“I slept in his parents' house when we were teenagers.”
Nobody answered.
“I called Dean Uncle Dean.”
Her voice broke.
“He was my father?”
Sarah nodded carefully.
“Biologically, yes.”
Veronica walked to the window.
Then suddenly turned.
“Lucas did know.”
Gavin stood.
“How?”
“Four months ago, when he contacted me.”
She covered her mouth.
“He said our families were connected in ways Gavin would never understand.”
“That isn't proof,” I said.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“But he gave me money.”
“How much?”
“Fifty thousand upfront.”
“From where?”
She opened her banking app.
The transfer came from a family trust.
HARPER LEGACY TRUST.
Beneficiary authorization:
D. HARPER.
Dean.
A dead man.
Or a supposedly dead one.
Mr. Keene immediately began tracing it.
The trust remained active.
Someone had been making withdrawals for years.
Veronica whispered:
“What if he's still alive?”
Dean would be in his seventies.
Possible.
Terrifying.
Gavin looked at his former wife.
“Why did you really come back?”
She stared.
“I told you.”
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“No more partial truths.”
Veronica looked at Hannah and Ben's photographs on Mr. Keene's bookshelf.
Then began crying.
“I was broke.”
There it was.
Not maternal awakening.
Not entirely.
“My second marriage failed. I owed taxes. My apartment lease was ending.”
“Lucas offered money,” Gavin said.
“Yes.”
“And you came.”
“Yes.”
“Did you miss the kids?”
Her face twisted.
“Yes.”
That answer sounded true.
Maybe complicated people can be selfish and loving at the same time.
“I thought I could fix everything.”
“By removing Mariana?”
Veronica looked at me.
“Lucas said they would never accept me while she was there.”
I felt a familiar anger.
“And you believed the solution was to erase me.”
She nodded shamefully.
“Yes.”
I appreciated the truth.
I did not forgive it.
Then Mr. Keene entered with new information.
The Harper Legacy Trust listed one living supervisory trustee.
Thomas Bell.
Lucas's lawyer.
He had been controlling Dean's money for more than a decade.
“So Dean might be dead after all,” Gavin said.
Mr. Keene nodded.
“Bell could be operating the trust.”
I frowned.
“Then maybe Lucas isn't the center.”
Everyone looked at me.
“What if Bell is?”
Arthur had named him.
Bell helped Dean disappear.
Bell became Harper Development's lawyer.
Bell controlled the legacy trust.
Bell had access to Gavin's business documents.
And Bell could have written Phase Two.
Gavin's phone rang.
Lucas.
He put it on speaker.
“You found the DNA report.”
Not a question.
Veronica stepped toward the phone.
“You knew.”
Lucas went silent.
“You knew I was your sister.”
“Yes.”
She slapped her hand over her mouth.
Gavin looked furious.
“For how long?”
“Since I was twenty-one.”
“Why didn't you tell her?”
“My father made me promise.”
Veronica laughed through tears.
“Your father?”
“Our father.”
“Don't call him that.”
Lucas's voice softened.
“Veronica, listen.”
“No.”
“Thomas Bell is going to kill Mariana.”
The room froze.
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
Lucas continued:
“You think I'm running this. I'm not.”
Gavin grabbed the phone.
“Where is Bell?”
“I don't know.”
“Why Mariana?”
“Because Ruth made her trustee.”
“So?”
“Bell needs the Milford property transferred before federal investigators secure it.”
Mr. Keene said:
“They already have the samples.”
“That isn't enough.”
Lucas sounded frantic.
“The original contamination wasn't the biggest crime.”
Sarah frowned.
“What was?”
Lucas whispered:
“Bodies.”
Silence.
“What bodies?” I asked.
“Three workers disappeared during the dumping operation in 1989.”
My skin went cold.
“Bell helped Dean bury them.”
“On Milford?”
“Yes.”
The land wasn't merely evidence of pollution.
It was a grave site.
Lucas continued:
“If authorities search the property, Bell goes to prison for murder.”
Then something crashed on his end.
Lucas gasped.
The line went dead.
We called back.
No answer.
Ten minutes later, police arrived at Lucas's condo.
Empty.
Blood on the kitchen floor.
May you like
And a message written across the wall:
THE TRUSTEE IS NEXT.
