Chapter 7 - CLAUDIA KNEW MY SISTER BEFORE SHE KNEW ME

Claudia stopped crying when I asked about Lucia.

That frightened me.

People cry while defending themselves.

Silence means calculation.

“How do you know Lucia Vance?”

She looked toward her attorney.

Then:

“She was my mother.”

The room stopped.

No.

Claudia was forty-three.

Lucia would have been maybe sixty?

Possible.

My father’s hidden daughter.

Claudia’s mother.

That would make Claudia my niece?

Wait.

If Lucia is Camila's half-sister, and Claudia is Lucia's daughter, Claudia is Camila's niece, despite near ages due generational age. But user says best friend since high school, same age-ish. Could happen if older half-sister had child young and father had Camila later. Need ensure plausible. Father could have Lucia at 18, Camila at 40; Claudia born when Lucia 20 -> Claudia ~2 years older than Camila. Perfect.

I stared.

“You’re Victor Vance’s granddaughter?”

“Yes.”

“And my niece.”

Claudia’s face broke.

“Yes.”

Fifteen years of friendship.

She knew?

“When did you find out?”

“When I was nineteen.”

Before we became close in college? They said high school. If Camila knew Claudia since high school, Claudia could have known then. Need say Claudia found out at 17 maybe. Let's adjust. She knew at seventeen. Continue.

“You knew when we became friends.”

“Yes.”

My stomach turned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Mom made me promise.”

“Lucia is alive?”

Claudia closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Another shock.

“Where?”

“I don’t know now.”

“What does that mean?”

Lucia had lived under surname Vega.

She wanted nothing from Victor.

At least initially.

She believed he abandoned her.

Then Victor reconnected secretly.

Set up trust.

Lucia remained angry.

When I was fifteen, Claudia transferred into my school.

Not coincidence.

Lucia arranged it.

She wanted Claudia near me.

“Why?”

“To know you.”

“Without telling me we were family.”

“Yes.”

Everything I believed about Claudia began with another hidden agenda.

“Did you become my friend because she told you to?”

“At first.”

That hurt.

Then Claudia whispered:

“Then because I loved you.”

Again.

Love layered over manipulation.

My life’s recurring theme.

“What happened to Lucia?”

Seven years earlier, shortly after Dad died, Lucia discovered Samuel Mercer had diverted assets from her trust.

She threatened litigation.

Then disappeared.

Claudia believed Samuel arranged it.

“Police?”

“She told me not to involve them.”

Before disappearing, Lucia sent Claudia trust credentials.

Instructions:

Watch Camila.

Protect the assets.

Do not tell anyone until Samuel is exposed.

Claudia had spent years living two lives.

My friend.

My hidden niece.

Secret observer of Vance trusts.

Then Alejandro entered.

He discovered Claudia’s identity two years into their affair.

“How?”

“He found letters.”

“And then?”

“He realized Mateo could be useful.”

My stomach tightened.

The embryo plan changed.

Alejandro knew Claudia was Victor’s granddaughter.

If she carried my biological child, Mateo would connect multiple Vance bloodlines in ways that could support fake succession arguments.

He exploited both of us.

But Claudia still agreed to transfer.

Why?

She wanted a child.

And believed the embryo was abandoned.

And wanted Alejandro.

Three selfish reasons.

Then I asked:

“Why did you access Lucia’s trust three weeks ago?”

“Because I got a message from her.”

My pulse jumped.

“Your mother contacted you?”

“Yes.”

“After seven years?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Claudia pulled out her phone.

Unknown encrypted message.

SAMUEL FOUND ME.

ALEJANDRO IS WORKING WITH HIM.

DO NOT TRUST THE DIVORCE.

My stomach tightened.

Lucia knew about the divorce before surgery.

Then:

CAMILA’S SURGERY IS NOT THE ENDPOINT. IT IS THE WINDOW.

What window?

If I died or became incapacitated, Samuel and Alejandro planned simultaneous challenges against both my trust and Lucia’s.

Two branches.

One attack.

Then Lucia wrote:

IF CAMILA WAKES UP, TELL HER I AM SORRY I STAYED DEAD TO HER.

“Where is she?”

Claudia shook her head.

“No location.”

Then another message arrived while we sat there.

Same encryption.

Claudia’s phone.

LUCA? No, Lucia.

CAMILA SURVIVED.

GOOD.

My chest tightened.

Next:

SAMUEL WILL RUN.

DO NOT LET HIM REACH MILWAUKEE.

Samuel Mercer lived Wisconsin.

What was in Milwaukee?

Nathan searched.

A Vance trust archive facility.

Old paper records.

Original signed trust documents.

Samuel might try to destroy evidence proving amendments fake.

Police moved.

Samuel had been released pending cooperation? If already in investigation maybe not arrested yet. He had admitted involvement but perhaps cooperating and not in custody. Let's say he fled his attorney meeting.

Samuel disappeared from counsel’s office that morning.

Car headed north.

Federal agents intercepted near Kenosha.

Inside:

Gasoline cans.

Document shredders.

Access keys.

He planned to burn the archive.

Arrested.

The original records survived.

And inside them—

Lucia’s trust.

Valid.

Substantial.

Current value:

$36 million.

She owned commercial assets Dad created.

Alejandro had tried to convert them.

Why?

Because Samuel convinced him Lucia was dead and unclaimed assets could be absorbed through litigation.

But Lucia lived.

Then the archive revealed something else.

Dad had named both Camila and Lucia as co-beneficiaries of one special property:

Vance Tower.

The downtown office building worth approximately $90 million.

I thought my trust owned it entirely.

Actually:

50% mine.

50% Lucia’s.

Income from Lucia’s half had been accumulating separately for nine years.

More than $14 million cash.

She had never touched it.

Where was Lucia?

Then law enforcement received a call from a woman in Milwaukee.

She identified herself:

Lucia Vance.

She wanted protection.

She would testify against Samuel.

I stopped breathing.

My sister.

Alive.

Then Claudia whispered:

“She won’t want to see you.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because she thinks Victor chose you.”

Maybe Dad did.

Maybe not.

Then Claudia added:

“And because she believes your husband found her through you.”

My stomach tightened.

Alejandro had turned my existence into danger for a sister I never knew.

Lucia entered protective custody.

She agreed to meet me once.

She walked into the room with my father’s eyes.

I cried instantly.

She did not.

“Camila.”

“Lucia.”

She sat.

Then said:

“I’m glad you survived.”

Not warm.

Not cruel.

Just true.

Then:

“Your father loved you.”

“Our father.”

Her jaw tightened.

“We can discuss terminology later.”

Fair.

She had sixty years of anger.

Then she placed a file on the table.

“Alejandro’s plan did not begin with you.”

My pulse changed.

“What?”

“He married you because Samuel chose him.”

Silence.

“Samuel introduced Alejandro to your life years before you met.”

I stared.

“No.”

Lucia opened a photograph.

Alejandro.

Age twenty-six.

Samuel Mercer.

At a fundraiser hosted by Vance Commercial Properties.

Two years before Alejandro and I supposedly met by chance.

My husband had been selected.
