My Husband Fractured My Arm / Chapter 3 / 9

Chapter 4 - The Company He Thought Would Protect Him

Marcus moved through the room like a man accepting an award.

He shook hands.

Accepted compliments.

Told three people that I had insisted on preparing everything despite my “little accident.”

His mother, Diane, touched my cast and frowned.

“You should have been more careful.”

Marcus smiled at her.

“Clara has always been clumsy.”

Several guests laughed politely.

I looked toward Detective Pierce.

She had arrived in a black dress and introduced herself as a friend from college.

Marcus did not recognize her.

Rachel stood near the back of the room.

Evelyn Wexler sat beside two board members.

Everything was in place.

Dinner began.

Marcus praised the roast.

He complimented himself for choosing the wine.

He told stories about negotiating contracts and saving Wexler Biomedical from financial disaster.

No one interrupted him.

During the main course, he stood and tapped his glass.

“I want to thank my wonderful wife.”

He gestured toward me.

“Even with her unfortunate injury, she understood how important tonight was.”

His guests applauded.

Marcus looked pleased.

I rose slowly.

The room became quiet.

My cast rested against my chest.

“I would also like to say a few words.”

Marcus’s expression shifted.

He had not planned for me to speak.

I smiled at him.

“Marcus is right.”

“Tonight is important.”

“For seven years, I helped create the image everyone here sees.”

“The perfect home.”

“The loyal wife.”

“The brilliant executive husband.”

Marcus laughed nervously.

“Clara, this is not the time for sentimental speeches.”

“No.”

“It is the time for honesty.”

I picked up the remote beside my plate.

The television behind the dining table turned on.

The first image showed my arm in the emergency room.

The fracture.

The swelling.

The bruises around my shoulder.

A silence moved through the room.

Marcus stood.

“Turn that off.”

The next image showed the medical report.

Patient states husband forced her outside during freezing conditions.

Diane covered her mouth.

Marcus’s father stared at him.

Then Detective Pierce stepped forward.

“Sit down, Mr. Vale.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Who are you?”

She showed her badge.

His face changed.

The screen played a security video from our neighbor’s doorbell camera.

It showed Marcus pushing me through the front door.

It showed him throwing my coat after me.

It showed him locking the door.

My fall happened beyond the camera’s view.

My scream did not.

One guest whispered, “Oh my God.”

Marcus turned toward me.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“You humiliated me in my own home.”

I looked around the dining room.

“This is not your home.”

Rachel opened the black folder.

She placed a copy of the deed beside his plate.

“The property belongs to the Clara Bennett Family Trust.”

“You have no ownership interest.”

Marcus stared at the page.

His breathing became uneven.

Evelyn Wexler stood.

“Before anyone leaves, the board also needs answers.”

She opened her folder.

Inside were copies of the failed safety reports bearing my forged signature.

Marcus looked at me with pure hatred.

“You had no right to search my office.”

“I had every right to protect my name.”

Evelyn faced him.

“Did you authorize shipment of defective monitors?”

Marcus said nothing.

Then the front door opened.

Two federal investigators entered.

The birthday feast had ended.

The investigation had begun.
