Chapter 7 - THE BLUE LEDGER CONTAINED MY NAME TOO

Patricia and I accessed the box legally the next morning.

Julian came.

Chloe stayed with the baby at the house.

The box contained three things.

A blue ledger.

A flash drive.

An envelope addressed:

ELENA ONLY.

I opened the ledger first.

Eleanor’s handwriting.

She had documented every major financial decision after her memory diagnosis.

Smart.

She feared forgetting.

So she wrote everything down.

Dates.

Amounts.

Who visited.

What she signed.

Why.

The first pages were ordinary.

Then Marcus appeared.

Marcus says Julian needs company funds for Canadian tax issue. I said no.

Then:

Marcus says Elena approved home-care reimbursement. Elena says she did not.

Then:

Do not trust Marcus alone.

My stomach tightened.

Eleanor had realized.

Then:

Chloe called. Baby due soon. Julian believes son is his. Chloe sounded frightened when Marcus’s name mentioned.

Then another line.

Marcus asked whether Elena could be removed as co-agent. Refused.

I looked at Patricia.

“He wanted access without me.”

“Yes.”

Then I found my name again.

Elena’s design company growing. She does not know I know. Proud of her.

My eyes filled.

During Eleanor’s decline, I worked from beside her bed.

She sometimes seemed asleep.

She noticed.

Then:

Elena paid $14,700 hospital balance from business account. Repay her.

Another:

Elena canceled own health insurance two months to pay night nurse. Must repay.

I closed my eyes.

She knew.

All the things I tried to hide so she would not feel guilty.

She knew.

Then the ledger became darker.

Julian asked me to sign transfer of Queens house to him. Refused.

Date:

Two years earlier.

While he was supposedly still coming home.

He had already tried to secure the property.

Then:

Julian said Elena would leave after divorce. Elena does not know divorce planned.

My stomach dropped.

Eleanor knew Julian intended to divorce me two years ago.

She never told me.

I felt betrayed.

Then the next line:

I wanted to tell Elena. Patricia advised I cannot reveal Julian’s privileged legal communication. I will protect Elena financially instead.

Not perfect.

Still painful.

But context.

Then the flash drive.

Video.

Eleanor.

Same cream cardigan.

She looked directly at camera.

“Elena, if you are watching this, you may be angry with me.”

I whispered:

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“I deserve some of it.”

That broke me.

Then:

“I knew Julian intended to leave you long before you did.”

Julian looked down.

“I did not tell you because I was afraid you would leave me too.”

There it was.

Eleanor had needed me.

And selfishly stayed silent.

No saint.

A complicated woman.

“I am sorry.”

I cried.

Then:

“You cared for me because you loved me.”

“I allowed that love to make me cowardly.”

Good.

Truth.

Then she said:

“The house is not enough.”

I frowned.

“I have also left Elena my interest in a second asset.”

Julian looked up.

“What second asset?”

Eleanor smiled slightly.

“The one Julian never knew I still owned.”

Then the video named it.

Bennett House Design Cooperative.

My company.

I froze.

“No.”

Eleanor had invested in my business?

I had no outside investors.

Or thought I didn’t.

Then I remembered my first large anonymous client.

A trust paid a huge deposit for a hotel redesign project.

That project saved my business.

Patricia explained.

Eleanor secretly guaranteed the contract through an investment vehicle.

She never owned my company directly.

Instead, she held a note convertible only if I chose.

Meaning:

No control.

No hidden ownership.

But a financial interest.

Value at death:

$420,000.

She left the note to me.

Effectively forgiving the obligation.

I stared.

My business had not been a miracle.

Eleanor had quietly helped.

I felt gratitude.

Then discomfort.

Then anger.

Again.

Choice taken from me.

Then Eleanor’s video said:

“If Elena does not want this gift, she may reject it.”

Good.

“Nothing I leave her is payment for loving me.”

Then:

“Now open the envelope.”

I did.

Inside was a copy of a private investigation report.

Subject:

MARCUS HALE.

At the bottom:

Possible identity fraud involving Julian Bennett.

Julian leaned closer.

“What identity fraud?”

The answer was on the next page.

Marcus had opened financial accounts using Julian’s passport information.

Cayman Harbor had not been controlled by one dishonest husband.

Someone had been impersonating him too.
