Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION

My father finally told me the truth.
Twenty-eight years earlier, my mother had given birth to twins.
Me.
And a boy.
His name was Michael.
But he was born with a serious heart condition.
Doctors told my parents he might not survive infancy.
My mother was devastated.
Diane offered help.
She claimed she knew a specialist who could save him.
Instead, she arranged for Michael to be placed with another family.
My father believed it was temporary.
Then the records disappeared.
My mother spent years searching.
Before she died, she discovered that Michael was alive.
She had begun legal action.
But she died before she could find him.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Dad's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was ashamed.”
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
The room fell silent.
Then the detective entered.
“We found Michael.”
I stood.
“Where?”
He gave me an address.
Michael lived less than an hour away.
He had spent his entire life believing his biological family had abandoned him.
When I met him, neither of us spoke.
We simply stared.
He had my mother's eyes.
I knew immediately.
He was my brother.
But before we could talk, police arrested Ryan.
He had been caught attempting to access the trust's financial accounts.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Witness intimidation.
Conspiracy.
And his connection to Diane's plan.
But Ryan refused to speak.
Until Rebecca placed one photograph in front of him.
A picture of Diane meeting her brother.
Ryan looked at it.
Then broke.
“She told me if I didn't help, she'd destroy all of us.”
“Why did she want Claire hurt?”
Ryan looked at me.
“Because you found the trust.”
“And Lauren?”
“She knew about the baby.”
“And Michael?”
Ryan lowered his head.
“Diane was afraid Michael would claim his inheritance.”
I stared at him.
“So she destroyed two families to control money.”
Ryan whispered:
“She destroyed ours long before you met me.”

For the first time, I saw him not as my husband.
But as a man who had chosen to become part of the lie.
