Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING MY MOTHER HID

The passage led beneath the house.
I crawled through dust and darkness until I reached a small room beneath the old library.
There was a desk.
A chair.
And an ancient cassette recorder.
My mother's handwriting was on the wall.
LISTEN BEFORE YOU DECIDE WHO TO HATE.
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then my mother's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“My daughter, if you're hearing this, I'm probably gone.”
I covered my mouth.
Her voice continued.
“I need you to understand that I never wanted you to inherit money.”
A pause.
“I wanted you to inherit freedom.”
I began crying.
“The trust was created because there are people who believe wealth gives them ownership over other human beings.”
She named several people.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Investors.
Then—
“Marcus Davis.”
My entire body went cold.
“He has been approaching the company through intermediaries.”
My mother continued.
“He doesn't want the money for himself.”
That sentence confused me.
“What does he want?”
The recording answered.
“Control.”
She explained that Marcus's family had once been involved in a failed business arrangement with her company.
They had lost millions.
They blamed my mother.
Then they discovered the trust.
The trust could restore their fortunes.
But there was a problem.
They couldn't access it while I remained independent.
My mother knew.
So she created protections.
The first was financial.
The second was legal.
The third was personal.
“Never marry someone who needs your signature more than your love.”
I closed my eyes.
The words felt like a knife.
Then the recording changed.
My mother sounded frightened.
“There is one person inside the family I don't trust.”
A pause.
“Tessa.”
I whispered:
“No.”
“She has been contacting Marcus for years.”
My heart shattered.
Tessa had been part of the plan from the beginning.
Then my mother's voice became quieter.
“If Marcus succeeds, he will attempt to make you appear unstable.”
I remembered every argument.
Every time Marcus told his friends I was emotional.
Every time he suggested I needed help.
Every time Tessa called me dramatic.
It had all been preparation.
The recording ended.
But beneath the machine was another envelope.
Inside was a letter addressed to me.
I opened it.
My darling,
If you've reached this point, then the people I feared have finally shown themselves.
Don't seek revenge.
Seek the truth.
The truth will destroy them more completely than anger ever could.
I held the letter against my chest.
Then I heard footsteps above me.
Someone had entered the library.
A floorboard creaked.
I turned off the recorder.
The hidden door opened.
Evelyn appeared.
Her face was bruised.
I rushed toward her.
“What happened?”
“They know about the recording.”
“Where are Marcus and Tessa?”
“Gone.”
“What did they take?”
Evelyn looked at the letter in my hand.
“Nothing.”

Then she smiled faintly.
“That is exactly what they wanted.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“They wanted you to find this.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
Evelyn looked toward the doorway.
“Because your mother left one secret that even I didn't know.”
“What secret?”
Evelyn's phone buzzed.

A message appeared.
