Chapter 7 - THE LETTER FROM A DEAD MAN

Claire did not touch the letter for almost a minute.

“Where did you get it?”

Evelyn answered:

“Daniel.”

That was worse.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Daniel has been in contact with my father?”

“He says no.”

“What does he say?”

“That it was mailed anonymously.”

Claire looked at postmark.

Milwaukee.

Eight months earlier.

Then handwriting.

She knew Martin’s handwriting.

Sharp M.

Long downward stroke on B.

Could be forged.

Naomi sent for forensic comparison.

Meanwhile Claire read.

Claire,

If this reaches you, then Ellison Global is probably in trouble again.

Her throat tightened.

Then:

Do not pledge Bennett Capital.

Not because Ellison is worthless.

Because someone inside Ellison has been using our assets to conceal losses since before Robert died.

Someone.

Then:

I believed I fixed the problem when I recapitalized the company.

I did not.

I merely made the balance sheet large enough to hide it longer.

Claire looked up.

“What problem?”

Evelyn said:

“I don’t know.”

Letter continued:

If Daniel ever asks you to guarantee company debt, demand original North Shore ledger from 2018.

North Shore.

James Vale’s fund?

Maybe.

Then:

Do not trust any summary signed by Evelyn, Henry or me.

Me.

Martin included himself.

Then:

There are transactions I approved that I regret.

Claire’s hands shook.

Then final:

If Madison Vale appears inside Daniel’s life, leave before the Vales make you collateral.

Her blood went cold.

Martin knew Madison?

Years ago?

Then signature.

M.B.

Naomi said:

“If genuine, somebody had contact with him after his supposed death.”

Claire whispered:

“He died of a heart attack in Zurich.”

Hospital.

Body cremated overseas according wishes.

Why no body?

Martin hated funerals.

Insurance.

Death certificate Swiss.

Attorney handled.

Could be fraud.

But why disappear?

Claire’s grief had been real.

She sat beside hospice? No, he supposedly died suddenly while traveling. That makes plausible.

Then forensic handwriting:

Likely genuine.

Ink age consistent months.

Not proof.

Then envelope DNA? Maybe fingerprint not.

Then Daniel called.

Claire answered.

“Where is my father?”

Silence.

“So Mother told you.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You had letter.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me?”

“Because I thought it was fake.”

“Then why keep it?”

“Because it mentioned Madison.”

Claire closed eyes.

He read letter three weeks ago.

Before Sunday lunch.

He knew Martin warned about Madison and Vales.

Yet still brought her.

Why?

Daniel said:

“I thought your father was manipulating us from the grave.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

Then:

“Did James Vale know about letter?”

“No.”

“Madison?”

“No.”

Then:

“Why did Mother have it?”

“I gave it to her.”

Of course.

Daniel gave Claire’s dead father’s letter to his mother instead of wife.

That summarized marriage.

Then Naomi investigated Martin’s death.

Insurance? Martin’s trust paid no death benefit maybe.

Zurich hospital confirmed patient under his passport entered, died, cremation? Data privacy but court channels.

Death certificate valid.

Could identity have been used by someone else?

Possible.

Then banking.

Martin’s personal accounts closed.

But one private trust remained active.

Bennett Continuity Foundation.

Quarterly transfers authorized by:

M. Bennett.

Could be trustee using inherited signing authority.

Trustee:

Samuel Cole.

Martin’s longtime chief of staff.

Where was Samuel?

Retired in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee.

Postmark.

Claire drove with Naomi.

Samuel lived near lake.

He opened door and started crying.

“Claire.”

She knew.

“My father is alive.”

Samuel stepped aside.

“Yes.”

The world went silent.

“Where?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Then I call police.”

“He is not missing.”

“He faked his death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Samuel looked at Naomi.

Then Claire.

“To keep you alive.”

No.

Claire almost laughed from rage.

“I have spent five years grieving him.”

“I know.”

“You watched?”

“Yes.”

“Why would anyone need me to think my father was dead?”

Samuel opened safe.

North Shore ledger.

Original.

2018.

Ellison Global had been hiding losses through special-purpose entities.

Who created?

Robert Ellison initially.

Not fraud necessarily.

Development risks.

Then after Robert’s death, Daniel and Evelyn continued.

But one entity:

Lake Meridian Holdings.

Ownership:

Martin Bennett 40%.

James Vale 40%.

Robert Ellison estate 20%.

Martin had been secretly partnered with James Vale.

Years before Claire knew Vales.

Then losses.

$110 million.

They refinanced using cross-guarantees.

Martin’s Bennett properties partially exposed.

When Martin discovered James was shifting losses into Bennett-linked vehicles, he confronted.

Threats?

Economic.

Then private plane crash? No.

Martin’s Swiss “death” perhaps witness protection? Maybe not government.

Samuel said Martin believed James Vale would destroy Claire financially if he remained visible.

So he staged death to break contractual trigger? Need logic.

There was a buy-sell clause:

If Martin died, his Lake Meridian interest transferred to a charitable trust, terminating personal guarantees.

If he withdrew alive, guarantees remained.

He used death to exit bad partnership.

Fraudulent.

Illegal perhaps.

He sacrificed identity.

Claire furious.

“He committed fraud.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“No.”

“Evelyn?”

“She suspected.”

Then why letter now?

Martin had learned Vantage reentered Ellison.

Madison near Daniel.

He feared pattern returning.

He broke silence.

Then:

“Where is he?”

Samuel refused.

Claire said:

“He does not get to protect me by controlling truth.”

Samuel looked ashamed.

Then phone buzzed.

Unknown encrypted message.

CLAIRE. DO NOT MAKE SAMUEL TELL YOU.

Her hands shook.

Another:

I WILL COME TO YOU.

Then:

BUT FIRST, ASK DANIEL WHY HE MET JAMES VALE IN ZURICH THE NIGHT I “DIED.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Daniel had been there?

He told her he was in Chicago when Martin died.

May you like

If Martin was telling truth—

Daniel knew far more about her father’s disappearance than he admitted.
