Chapter 7 - MY FATHER’S PLANE CRASH CAME BACK INTO THE STORY

My father’s death had been investigated.
Mechanical failure.
Small private plane.
Pilot and my father killed.
No sabotage found.
I did not immediately believe Grant.
Good.
Evidence.
Grant claimed Peter found a payment.
Caroline Foundation to aviation maintenance subcontractor weeks before crash.
$200,000.
That looked bad.
Then Richard remembered Caroline and my father had argued.
About Hartwell voting.
Dad supported Richard.
Caroline furious.
Motive? Weak.
Then Caroline produced proof payment was legitimate investment unrelated to plane.
Company serviced corporate fleets.
Not my father’s aircraft.
Could be coincidence.
Then Grant offered emails.
CAROLINE:
JAMES NEEDS TO STOP INTERFERING.
Unknown recipient:
HE WON’T BE A PROBLEM MUCH LONGER.
Chilling.
But who recipient?
Peter? Isabel? Could be taken out of context.
Caroline said message concerned board vote because my father was retiring from committee.
Then second email after crash:
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
Normal after death.
Grant was weaponizing ambiguity.
Again.
Then federal investigators reviewed crash file independently.
No evidence of sabotage.
Fuel.
Maintenance.
Weather.
Propeller failure.
Could still be accident.
I refused to let Grant rewrite my father’s death for leverage without proof.
Caroline looked at me.
“You believe me?”
“I believe evidence.”
She nodded.
Probably first sane thing our family had done.
Then another truth.
My father had known Grant was investigating Hartwell.
He wrote me a letter six years ago.
Never delivered.
Why?
He gave to Richard?
No.
To Isabel.
What?
Isabel had been working briefly with my father on family governance.
He asked her to give me letter if Grant became “too interested.”
She kept it.
Why?
Resentment.
“I thought he was manipulating you against Mom.”
Another protective lie.
She finally handed it over.
Amelia,
Grant is ambitious. Ambition is not a crime.
Then:
But he asks questions about structures that have nothing to do with his marriage.
My father noticed.
Then:
Do not hide wealth to protect a man’s pride. Hidden power becomes distorted power.
I cried.
That was exactly my mistake.
I had thought silence kept marriage equal.
Instead it let Grant invent fantasy that everything around him was his.
Dad wrote:
If he ever makes you feel guilty for what you inherited, tell him inheritance is responsibility, not apology.
I closed eyes.
Six years late.
Still useful.
Then final:
And if you ever have to choose between protecting his image and protecting yourself, choose yourself quickly.
I had not.
It took a belt.
Then corporate investigation deepened.
Grant had approved acquisitions benefiting companies where Peter held interests.
Shareholder lawsuits.
DOJ? Fictional federal authorities looking.
SEC-style regulators.
He faced enough.
Then Vanessa made another disclosure.
Grant kept private recordings of board members.
Dinners.
Calls.
Confessions.
Leverage files.
Same pattern as abusers collect weaknesses.
Where?
A lake property in Wisconsin.
Search warrant.
Inside safe:
Hard drives.
Cash.
Passports.
More Hartwell templates.
And one envelope marked:
AMELIA.
I opened with counsel.
Photos.
My miscarriages medical records.
Therapy notes from grief counselor.
How?
Illegal access perhaps through Peter’s behavioral consultant network.
Grant had collected my most private moments.
Then a memo:
If Amelia challenges marital agreement, demonstrate emotional instability related to pregnancy loss and father death.
I almost vomited.
He had planned to weaponize my grief.
Then audio.
Me crying after second miscarriage.
Grant comforting me.
Recorded.
Why record?
He said:
“I’m here.”
I had believed tenderness.
Maybe even then, he saved it as leverage.
Was recording intentional? File timestamp from home security? Could be ambient system. Still he archived.
Then another audio six years ago.
Grant speaking to unknown man.
“She won’t have children.”
Man:
“That simplifies succession.”
Grant:
“Don’t talk about my wife like that.”
Interesting.
He defended me.
Then same man:
“You’ll thank me later.”
Who?
Voice analysis.
Samuel Price.
Hartwell outside tax attorney.
Not known.
He had advised Grant?
Then records showed Samuel connected to Caroline.
Maybe bridge architect before Isabel.
But let's not add too many. Keep unknown maybe later.
Then Grant:
“I love her.”
Man:
“Love doesn’t mean you ignore opportunity.”
Silence.
That might be moment corruption began.
Whoever mentored him.
Then Richard recognized voice.
“Thomas Vale.”
Who?
Former Hartwell family advisor.
Dead?
No.
Retired in Monaco.
He had served my grandfather.
Caroline’s mentor.
Richard fired him years ago.
Another old grievance.
Could be source of Hartwell templates and succession disputes.
Grant may have been groomed into bridge strategy by someone older than Isabel.
Then Thomas Vale’s company received payments from Mercer.
$11 million.
Caroline looked shocked.
“He was advising Grant too?”
Apparently.
Everyone thought Thomas on their side.
Classic.
Then investigators subpoenaed him.
He vanished.
Monaco residence empty.
Last flight:
New York.
Then Julia received package from anonymous source.
Inside original $3.2 billion rescue draft.
Red notes.
My name.
Richard’s.
Grant’s.
Caroline’s.
At top:
PHASE ONE COMPLETE WHEN AMELIA IS REMOVED FROM MARITAL EQUITY.
Author initials:
T.V.
Thomas Vale.
My divorce had been part of someone else’s plan.
Grant may have thought he was mastermind.
Maybe he was a piece too.
Then handwritten note:
GRANT IS USEFUL ONLY UNTIL MERCER CLOSES.
May you like
Meaning even Grant was disposable.
And the $3.2 billion rescue may have been designed to trap Hartwell, not save Mercer.
