Chapter 9 - INGRID HAD BEEN WAITING FOR SOPHIA

Ingrid demanded a meeting.
I declined.
She arrived at Rachel’s office anyway.
Rachel gave me the choice.
I said yes.
Not alone.
Ingrid entered wearing the same dark-red coat she wore to Sunday dinners.
She looked furious.
“Evelyn, this has gone far enough.”
I almost smiled.
“For me too.”
“You’re tearing apart a marriage over things you do not understand.”
“I understand German now.”
Her jaw tightened.
Then:
“I always knew Sophia was a better match for Lukas.”
There it was.
No warm-up.
No disguise.
“Why?”
“She understands our culture.”
“I learned your language.”
“That is not the same.”
“What is?”
Ingrid’s eyes moved away.
Then I understood.
“She would give you grandchildren.”
Her expression answered.
I laughed once.
Small.
Ugly.
“You have hated me for six years because I didn’t produce a baby.”
“I never said hated.”
“No. You just discussed me like defective equipment.”
Rachel actually looked startled.
Ingrid continued:
“Family matters to me.”
“So why did you help your married son start another one?”
“Because Lukas was miserable.”
“He told me we were enough.”
“He lied to protect you.”
I stared.
Every lie in this family eventually became protection.
Then Ingrid said:
“When Sophia became pregnant, I thought perhaps this could heal everything.”
“How?”
“You could remain married. Sophia could continue her career. The child could know all of us.”
“You mean I could provide free childcare.”
“That is vulgar.”
“So was your plan.”
She stood.
“You wanted a child!”
“I wanted my child.”
Silence.
Not any baby.
Not a consolation prize.
Not proof my body could be replaced by another woman’s.
My child.
Or no child.
My choice.
Then Ingrid said:
“You will regret throwing away ten years.”
I answered:
“He threw them away one lie at a time.”
For once, she had nothing.
As she left, Heinrich was waiting in the hallway.
She stared at him.
“You did this.”
He shook his head.
“No. We did this by pretending Lukas never needed consequences.”
That was the first time I heard his voice sound strong.
Then divorce discovery produced the full spending total.
Affair-related.
Hidden legal planning.
Credit account.
Misused family IVF gifts.
Some categories overlapped.
After tracing, Rachel’s forensic accountant identified roughly $96,000 in undisclosed or misrepresented spending connected to Lukas’s secret life and financial decisions.
Not all legally recoverable.
Not all mine.
But all real.
Then one final account appeared.
A custodial investment account.
Opened three years earlier.
Beneficiary:
FUTURE CHILD OF LUKAS VANCE.
Balance:
May you like
$28,400.
He had been saving for a child privately while telling me we could barely afford another IVF attempt.
