Chapter 8 - VANESSA HAD TAKEN RYAN'S MOTHER

Ryan looked at Vanessa as if he had never seen her before.
“You knew?”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“Not who she was.”
“Your name is on the form.”
“I picked up someone for Daniel.”
“What?”
Vanessa explained through tears.
Before Daniel died, he arranged emergency instructions.
If certain files were opened or if Vanessa felt threatened, she was to contact Elaine Brooks at St. Catherine’s.
Brooks would connect her to a woman named Maggie.
Vanessa assumed Maggie was a witness.
Two months ago, Brooks contacted her.
Said Maggie needed relocation.
Vanessa paid for a private transfer.
“Where?”
“A residence in Vermont.”
Ryan stood.
“You moved my mother to Vermont and never asked who she was?”
“I was following Daniel’s instructions.”
I almost laughed at the symmetry.
Everyone following dead men’s instructions instead of speaking to living people.
“Address,” I said.
Vanessa gave it immediately.
Ryan wanted to leave.
I stopped him.
“Federal investigators go first.”
“She’s my mother.”
“And Lily is my daughter. We do this safely.”
He listened.
Progress arrived at terrible times.
The Vermont residence confirmed Margaret was there.
Alive.
Safe.
Confused but lucid.
Ryan traveled under law-enforcement coordination.
I stayed with Lily.
I did not need to witness every family reunion.
Hours later, Ryan called.
He was crying.
“She remembers me.”
I closed my eyes.
“I’m glad.”
“She said Dad had her committed.”
“I know.”
“No. Claire…”
His voice broke.
“My mother never had delusions.”
Edward bribed a physician to certify Margaret as dangerous.
He used wealth, legal teams, and her lack of independent finances to erase her.
For years, she wrote Ryan letters.
None reached him.
Daniel found copies during his audit.
That was why Daniel created instructions to protect her.
Then Ryan told me something else.
Margaret remembered Dr. Caleb Sinclair.
Vanessa’s father-in-law.
He had not willingly participated.
He later tried to expose Edward.
Edward threatened Daniel, then a teenager.
Caleb stayed silent.
Years later, Daniel discovered his father’s guilt and decided to finish what Caleb never did.
The story had become generational.
Parents hiding crimes.
Children inheriting secrets.
Then my attorney called.
Paternity testing on Noah had been expedited because of the disputed embryo documentation.
Results were available.
I almost did not want to know.
But Ryan had a right to.
So did Vanessa.
The result:
Ryan was not Noah’s father.
Daniel Sinclair was.
Vanessa sobbed when told.
Ryan went silent.
For nine months, he had built an emotional crisis around a possibility that had never existed.
But my attorney was not finished.
“There’s another genetic result.”
“What?”
The clinic tested remaining stored material.
The vial labeled RYAN WHITMORE did not contain Ryan’s DNA.
I frowned.
“Whose?”
They compared it against available family profiles.
May you like
The sample belonged to Edward Whitmore.
Ryan’s father had secretly replaced his son’s stored reproductive sample with his own.
