Chapter 3 - THE BONUS HE HID WHILE I WAS BUYING DIAPERS

Adam had put the bonus into an individual account.
Legally his name.
Marital money still mattered in divorce, according to the attorney Elise had quietly recommended.
But emotionally?
It felt like something else.
At the hospital, two days after the C-section, I had worried aloud about the cost of extended leave.
Adam held my hand and said:
“We’ll figure it out.”
He already had sixty-two thousand dollars.
I stared at him.
“Where is it?”
“Most of it is still there.”
“Most?”
“I invested some.”
“In Savannah?”
“In her business.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much total?”
“Twenty-five.”
“Thousand?”
“Yes.”
The $18,500 transfer plus another $6,500 from his bonus.
I almost admired the organization.
Affair.
Apartment.
Investment.
All while kissing my forehead beside Nell’s hospital bassinet.
“What does Savannah’s company do?”
“Corporate event logistics.”
Elise returned.
“She started it recently?”
Adam nodded.
“When?”
“Five months ago.”
One month before the affair began.
Convenient.
Then Adam said something unexpected.
“I own twenty percent.”
That stopped me.
“What?”
“I invested for equity.”
“You’re business partners.”
“Yes.”
“And lovers.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
Suddenly the “business trip” became darker.
He had not lied completely.
There had been business.
Just not the business he implied.
Then Elise placed her phone in front of me.
She had searched the company registration.
Sable North LLC.
Original members:
Savannah Cole — 60%.
Adam Bennett — 20%.
One more person:
Bernice Bennett — 20%.
I stared.
Adam’s mother.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had apparently told him I had a fever.
My mouth went dry.
“Bernice owns part of Savannah’s company?”
Adam looked genuinely confused.
“What?”
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
For the first time, I believed him immediately.
We called Bernice.
She answered.
“Marina?”
“Are you part owner of Sable North?”
Silence.
Then:
“Who told you?”
I looked at Adam.
He looked equally shocked.
“The state business registry.”
Bernice sighed.
“Then we need to talk.”
Adam grabbed the phone.
“Mom, what the hell?”
“Not over the phone.”
“Why are you listed with Savannah?”
“Because I invested.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Before the affair.
Before Sable North officially launched.
Adam whispered:
“You knew her?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Bernice’s voice changed.
“Savannah came to me before she came to you.”
Adam went still.
“For what?”
Then Bernice said:
“She wanted money.”
“Why?”
Another silence.
“Because she had something she thought could destroy your career.”
The room became completely still.
Adam stared at the phone.
“What did she have?”
Bernice answered:
May you like
“A recording.”
And whatever was on that recording had apparently connected Savannah to my husband before the affair ever began.
