Chapter 7 - THE MAN DANIEL TRUSTED MORE THAN ANYONE

Michael Trent had been with Daniel for thirteen years.

Driver first.

Security.

Then operations.

Daniel described him once as the closest thing he had to a brother.

Now Sarah’s evidence showed he had intercepted messages about Peter Sloan.

Why?

Money?

Fear?

Something else?

Daniel called his Boston office.

Michael was gone.

So were three encrypted drives.

No violence.

No confrontation.

He simply disappeared.

Daniel stared out the Vermont window.

“This is on me.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“I trusted him.”

“That is not a crime.”

“In my world, sometimes it is.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You do not get to turn being betrayed into evidence you were stupid for trusting.”

Silence.

Then Sarah said:

“Emily sounds like Thomas.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Good.

We returned to Boston.

Not secretly.

Sarah chose to come.

Her decision.

She entered witness protection through federal authorities after turning over the evidence.

No more hiding without legal structure.

Then Michael contacted Daniel.

“Meet me.”

Daniel said no.

Michael laughed.

“You’ve changed.”

“Apparently.”

“Because of the bookstore girl?”

I hated that phrase.

Daniel replied:

“Because I’m tired of people using other humans as explanations for my choices.”

I looked at him.

That was good.

Michael agreed to speak through counsel.

His confession surprised us.

He had not been working for Peter originally.

He had been working for the FBI.

Undercover.

Thirteen years.

Daniel went completely still.

“You’re federal?”

“Yes.”

Everything shifted.

Michael had been gathering evidence on Daniel’s organization.

But five years earlier, Peter learned his identity.

Blackmail.

Peter threatened Michael’s younger sister.

From then on, Michael fed Peter selected information.

He tried to minimize damage.

Failed.

He intercepted Sarah’s message because Peter ordered him to.

But he did not destroy it.

He hid copies.

Why disappear now?

Because Jason found out Michael was double-playing Peter.

Michael feared arrest from both sides.

Daniel asked:

“Did you ever plan to send me to prison?”

Michael answered:

“Yes.”

Honest.

Daniel laughed once.

Painful.

“Good to know.”

Then Michael gave investigators the encrypted drives.

One contained Peter’s payment records.

Another contained Daniel’s organization charts.

The third?

A video.

Thomas Brooks.

Daniel’s father.

Recorded the night before his death.

Thomas spoke directly to camera.

“Daniel, if you ever see this, I need you to know something.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“I was not trying to leave the family business for you.”

Pause.

“I was trying to leave it because of you.”

Daniel looked down.

Thomas continued.

“I do not want you inheriting fear as a profession.”

Then:

“Maple Street is my exit plan.”

I looked at the screen.

The building.

Not only property.

Thomas had intended to convert it into a legitimate community business hub funded by separated legal assets.

Bookstore.

Offices.

Education spaces.

A way out.

Then the final line:

“Sarah knows where the clean accounts are.”

Everyone turned toward my mother.

She closed her eyes.

“I hoped we wouldn’t get to that yet.”

Of course.

“What accounts?”

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“Your father left you seventy-eight million dollars.”

Legitimate money.

May you like

Untouched.

Hidden for sixteen years.
