Chapter 8 - NATALIE HAD HELPED CREATE SOPHIE

I refused to believe it.

Then I remembered how many times belief had failed me.

Evidence.

Always.

Federal agents entered the mountain property.

William arrested.

Natalie surrendered without resistance.

Charles was gone.

Inside they found original fertility-clinic files.

Consent forms.

Embryology logs.

Genetic-selection notes.

And emails.

Natalie had been involved.

Not from the beginning.

She discovered William’s plan after he bribed clinic administrators.

He intended to substitute his sperm without telling anyone.

Natalie found out.

She had two choices.

Expose him and risk the clinic destroying evidence.

Or interfere.

She interfered.

But not how I expected.

The embryo transferred into me had already been fertilized with William’s sperm.

Natalie discovered it too late to stop fertilization.

She could have destroyed the embryo.

She didn’t.

Why?

Her recorded interview answered.

“It was a viable embryo.”

Agent Nguyen asked:

“That does not explain why you allowed Claire to receive it without consent.”

Natalie cried.

“I was afraid if I stopped the cycle, William would try again somewhere else.”

“So you chose for Claire.”

“Yes.”

My stomach twisted.

Another adult deciding what was best for me.

Again.

Natalie altered records to make William believe his plan worked exactly as intended.

Then she began building evidence.

She hired me years later partly because she wanted proximity to Daniel’s branch.

But Sophie had already been born.

Wait—the timeline didn't fit: Natalie hired me before Daniel? earlier text says hired 12 years later before married, but Sophie 4. Need maybe Natalie hired Claire before she dated Daniel, which is plausible. She knew Claire as potential? How could she predict IVF years later? She didn't. So she hired Claire to watch Daniel when they began dating? Actually letter said hired because of Daniel, before they married. Maybe Claire already knew Daniel? We'll smooth: Natalie had known Claire was dating Daniel when hired. Fine.

“Why didn’t you tell me after Sophie was born?”

“I wanted proof strong enough to destroy William.”

I stared through the interview glass.

That phrase.

Proof strong enough.

Daniel had used it.

Natalie used it.

Everyone waited for enough evidence while Sophie lived inside consequences.

“You used my body as evidence.”

Natalie covered her face.

“Yes.”

I felt nothing.

Not rage yet.

Just emptiness.

Then:

“Did you love Sophie?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t.”

Natalie looked up.

“Do not use love to excuse control.”

She cried.

“I’m not.”

Good.

William refused to speak.

Until Daniel entered.

Not as attorney.

Not negotiator.

As son.

William looked seventy-five.

Older.

Still arrogant.

“You finally figured it out.”

Daniel stared.

“You made my daughter genetically your child.”

William’s expression hardened.

“I preserved the Bennett line.”

“She is not a bloodline.”

“She is the future of the company.”

“She is four.”

“She will be protected.”

Daniel laughed.

“From what?”

“People like Charles.”

“You partnered with Charles.”

“I used him.”

“Same thing.”

William looked toward me through the glass.

“Claire doesn’t understand what I saved.”

I entered.

Rebecca advised against it.

I went anyway.

“What did you save?”

William smiled.

“The family.”

“No.”

“You married a man with no Bennett blood.”

I looked at Daniel.

Then back.

“I married Daniel.”

“The trust would have cut him out.”

“So?”

William almost looked offended.

“Everything I built would leave the family.”

“You mean your genes.”

“Yes.”

Finally.

Pure.

Ugly.

“You violated an IVF process because your son wasn’t biologically yours.”

“He was legally mine.”

“Yet biology mattered enough to violate me.”

Silence.

He did not see contradiction.

That was the problem.

“You created Sophie for a trust.”

“I ensured her future.”

“You created financial value in her name and then stole through it.”

“I moved assets.”

“You terrorized her into silence through Evelyn.”

His face changed.

“I never told Evelyn to strike her.”

“But you used her fear.”

“Yes.”

Again.

No shame.

He believed ends justified everything.

Then I asked:

“Where is Charles?”

William smiled.

“No idea.”

Lie.

“Why does he matter more than you?”

His smile disappeared.

There.

“What does Charles have?”

No answer.

“Natalie said he kept you out of prison.”

William looked away.

Charles had leverage.

Something older than the fake death.

Something William feared.

Agent Nguyen entered.

“We found it.”

A drive recovered from the quarry.

Charles’s insurance file.

Video.

Fifteen years earlier.

William Bennett.

Charles Vane.

And city officials.

Discussing illegal land acquisitions.

Bribes.

Then another conversation.

A death.

Whose?

Daniel’s biological father.

Evelyn’s affair partner.

Name:

Michael Grant.

He died in a construction accident twenty-nine years earlier.

Officially.

Video-William said:

“Grant won’t sign.”

Charles answered:

“Then he doesn’t leave the site tomorrow.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

His biological father’s death may have been murder.

William knew.

Possibly ordered.

Evelyn screamed when she saw the recording.

The entire family history turned criminal.

Then Charles called me.

Directly.

“Claire.”

I was done being surprised.

“What do you want?”

“Sophie.”

“No.”

“Not physically.”

“What then?”

“Her trust rights.”

I laughed.

“No.”

“If you don’t sign them over, Daniel sees the rest of the video.”

“Send it.”

Silence.

He had expected fear.

“Send everything.”

“You don’t know what it shows.”

“I don’t care.”

Daniel looked at me.

I continued:

“No more trading silence for protection.”

Charles’s voice hardened.

“Then your husband learns what Evelyn did after Michael died.”

Daniel froze.

Evelyn went pale.

“What did she do?”

Charles laughed softly.

“Ask her why William believed Daniel was his son for twenty-nine years.”

Then he hung up.

Evelyn sat down.

Daniel stared at her.

“Mom?”

She began crying.

“I changed the paternity test.”

Another forged family identity.

She had convinced William Daniel was biologically his for decades.

Why?

“To keep him from taking you away from me.”

The room went silent.

The lies never ended.

Then Sophie, in the next room, laughed at something Maria said.

I heard her.

Small.

Bright.

Alive.

And for the first time, I understood the only way to stop this story.

May you like

Not by solving every secret.

By removing Sophie from every system built around them.
