Chapter 11 - WHAT DAD HID IN UNIT 417

The storage unit smelled like cardboard and dust.
There were no family photographs.
No furniture.
No sentimental belongings.
Just boxes.
Financial boxes.
Mom’s financial boxes.
Tax returns.
Property records.
Trust correspondence.
Insurance documents.
Dad had removed them from the house while she was dying.
He had been building his own archive.
Then we found a locked metal case.
Inside were copies of documents I recognized from Mr. Bennett’s files.
Except these versions were different.
Mom’s signature appeared on everything.
The deed transfer.
The beneficiary forms.
The investment withdrawal.
Dad had created an entire false paper trail.
“He planned to challenge the estate,” Mr. Bennett said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Using these?”
“Yes.”
My stomach turned.
If Mom hadn’t hired her own attorney...
If she hadn’t documented her competency...
If she hadn’t created the trust...
Dad might have gotten away with it.
Then I found a notebook.
Dad’s handwriting.
Dates.
Amounts.
Lists.
Some pages contained ordinary financial notes.
Others looked like plans.
Sell house after probate.
Pay bank.
Close restaurant debt.
Lake house = primary.
L and I marry after suitable period.
Suitable period.
Three weeks, apparently.
Then one line made my blood run cold.
Evelyn getting suspicious.
Another:
Need Lisa to keep her calm.
I had to sit down.
Lisa had kept Mom calm.
Every visit.
Every bowl of soup.
Every fake smile.
Not because she loved her sister.
Because Dad needed Mom unsuspecting.
Daniel turned another page.
There were initials we didn’t recognize.
T.M.
Beside them:
$5,000 after signature issue handled.
Mr. Bennett immediately photographed the page.
“Who is T.M.?”
Nobody knew.
Then an investigator found an envelope at the bottom of the case.
Inside was a canceled check.
Five thousand dollars.
Payable to Thomas Mercer.
I knew the name.
He was the notary on two of the disputed forms.
Mr. Bennett called the state licensing database.
Thomas Mercer had notarized documents claiming Mom personally appeared before him.
But on one of those dates...
Mom had been hospitalized forty miles away.
Dad hadn’t forged documents alone.
He had paid someone to legitimize them.
That changed everything.
Later that afternoon, police located Dad.
He had checked into a motel near the state line.
He wasn’t arrested for the affair.
He wasn’t arrested for marrying Lisa.
He was taken in for questioning about financial fraud.
And when investigators searched his car, they found one thing that made even Mr. Bennett go silent.
Mom’s original passport.
Dad had reported it lost seven months earlier.

But according to an email found on his laptop...
He had used her identification to open an account she never knew existed.
