Chapter 11 - MADISON’S FATHER HAD A PLAN TOO

Harrison Vale did not deny it.

That surprised everyone.

When Arthur and I met him privately, he read the document metadata and sighed.

“Yes. My legal team drafted an ownership-cleanup memorandum.”

“Why?”

“Because before investing forty million dollars, I wanted to know what claims might exist.”

That made sense.

“What did Grant tell you about me?”

Harrison looked uncomfortable.

“That you had no ownership.”

“Clearly.”

“He said any founder advance had been repaid.”

“That may be true.”

“He also said you had performed informal spousal support, not compensable consulting.”

There it was.

My work erased again.

“Did you believe him?”

“At the time.”

“Then why draft a waiver?”

“Because my lawyers didn’t.”

Interesting.

Vale’s lawyers had found enough old documentation to worry.

They recommended obtaining a clean release from me before the investment closed.

“Did anyone contact me?”

Harrison said nothing.

Arthur leaned forward.

“Did Grant tell you Charlotte signed?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“And you accepted that?”

“I received the executed copy.”

The fake waiver.

“So the investment relied partly on it.”

“Yes.”

Now Harrison had a problem too.

Not necessarily wrongdoing.

Reliance.

Bad diligence.

Maybe embarrassment.

Then I asked:

“When did Madison become involved with Grant?”

Harrison’s face hardened.

“I don’t discuss my daughter’s private life.”

“Your lawyers drafted my waiver before their official relationship.”

He looked at me.

Then sighed.

“They knew each other.”

“How well?”

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

“Madison attended meetings.”

Of course.

She worked in strategic communications for Vale Capital.

She and Grant met professionally months before I discovered the affair.

Maybe nothing happened then.

Maybe everything did.

Harrison continued:

“I did not encourage an affair.”

“I didn’t ask that.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“But I did encourage a closer business relationship.”

A merger without romance.

Then romance came.

Convenient.

The worst part was this:

Harrison had viewed Grant as talented but undercapitalized.

Grant saw Harrison as access to money.

Madison became the bridge.

In other words, Grant had repeated the same pattern he once accused me of creating.

He used relationships to gain opportunity.

But when I helped him, it threatened his pride.

When he used Madison, he called it strategy.

Then Harrison said:

“There’s something you should know about the forged waiver.”

“What?”

“The version we received did not have Helen’s notary.”

Arthur and I exchanged a look.

“What did it have?”

“Electronic acknowledgment.”

Different document.

Someone altered it again later.

Why?

Maybe to satisfy another lender demanding notarization.

This suggested the false waiver evolved over time.

Each new financing round added another layer.

Grant might not even know every version.

That did not excuse him.

But the structure was larger than one lie.

Harrison looked exhausted.

“I am withdrawing from the marriage arrangements.”

I almost smiled.

“Meaning?”

“Madison ended the engagement this morning.”

I felt nothing triumphant.

“Why?”

“She found another document.”

Of course she did.

Harrison handed it to me.

A proposed post-marital trust.

Prepared for after Grant and Madison’s wedding.

It limited Madison’s access to Holloway assets.

It also gave Grant extensive voting authority over any Vale Capital interests she inherited.

Madison had thought she was merging with Grant.

Grant had been preparing to absorb her too.

Then Harrison added:

“There’s one final schedule.”

“What?”

“Grant listed future capital sources.”

Names.

Banks.

Investors.

Family trusts.

At the bottom:

ASHBOURNE RECONCILIATION POTENTIAL.

I stared.

Even while planning to marry Madison, Grant had considered whether he could restore enough relationship with me to regain access to Ashbourne capital.

I almost laughed.

May you like

Not because it was funny.

Because some men never stop believing every woman in their life remains a door they can reopen when convenient.
