Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK

Daniel Cross walked into the police station the next morning.

I knew him immediately.

Not because I had ever met him.

Because he looked exactly like the man in the photographs.

Older.

Thinner.

One side of his face scarred.

But alive.

Claire ran toward him.

"Dad."

He caught her.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then he looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Lila."

I couldn't move.

He approached slowly.

"I am so sorry."

"For what?"

"For leaving you."

"You didn't leave me."

He shook his head.

"I did."

Daniel explained everything.

The accident had been staged.

Rebecca had helped him disappear because she wanted him to escape before my father killed him.

But Daniel couldn't return immediately.

He had spent years collecting evidence.

Every transfer.

Every fake signature.

Every shell company.

Every person involved.

He had been waiting for the right moment.

And the wedding had finally given him one.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Rebecca had people watching you."

"She still does."

Daniel nodded.

"Not anymore."

He handed me a folder.

Inside was the original ownership agreement.

My name was there.

The company had legally belonged to me since I was nineteen.

The twelve-million-dollar property belonged to me.

The investment accounts belonged to me.

And the eight-million-dollar trust belonged to me.

My entire family had spent years pretending I was struggling.

They had been stealing from someone they didn't even realize was wealthy.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

"What happened to Rebecca?"

Daniel's face became serious.

"She disappeared."

"Again?"

He nodded.

"She knew the police were closing in."

I felt a chill.

"Where is she?"

"We don't know."

Then he handed me another photograph.

Rebecca stood beside someone.

A man.

I stared.

It was the same accountant who had recommended Marcus.

Except Marcus wasn't in the picture.

The man was his father.

Daniel explained that the family had been running the scheme for decades.

Marcus had inherited the role.

And Rachel had been working for Rebecca.

The entire operation was bigger than I had imagined.

But it was collapsing.

The police arrested my father.

Rachel was charged with kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy.

Savannah was questioned for hours.

She eventually admitted everything.

She told them about the forged documents.

The fake invoices.

The plan to frame me.

She also admitted that my mother had known about the theft.

Mom wasn't arrested immediately.

Instead, she agreed to cooperate.

She gave investigators access to the house.

That's where they found the final piece of evidence.

A locked cabinet.

Inside were boxes containing decades of financial records.

And one handwritten diary.

My mother's.

I read the first page.

The first sentence destroyed me.

I never wanted Lila.

I closed the diary.

I couldn't read anymore.

But Claire took it gently.

"You don't have to."

I looked at her.

"Why does everyone say they wanted to protect me?"

"Because people confuse possession with love."

Those words stayed with me.

Three weeks later, Savannah called from jail.

She asked me to visit.

I almost said no.

But I went.

She looked smaller behind the glass.

"I don't expect forgiveness," she said.

"Good."

She nodded.

"I deserve that."

Then she told me something I hadn't known.

"Mom never wanted you to know the truth because she was afraid you'd leave."

"I did leave."

Savannah smiled sadly.

"Yeah."

She looked down.

"But you finally left for the right reason."

I stood.

Before walking away, I asked:

"Was there ever a moment you actually loved me?"

She began crying.

"Every moment."

I didn't know whether to believe her.

Maybe that was the hardest part.

Because sometimes people can love you and still destroy you.

I walked out.

Outside, Claire was waiting.

Daniel stood beside her.

For the first time, I didn't feel like I had lost my family.

I felt like I had finally found the truth.

Then Daniel said:

"There's one last thing."

I turned.

He held out an envelope.

"Rebecca sent this yesterday."

My heart stopped.

"She's alive?"

He nodded.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

May you like

On the back were seven words:

YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO YOUR REAL MOTHER IS.
