Chapter 5 - The Secret Meeting

Claire called Daniel that evening.

She didn’t tell him I was sitting beside her.

She only asked whether he could come by the next morning.

His answer was immediate.

“Is everything okay?”

Claire looked at me.

“Yes. I just need to talk to you.”

After the call, I barely slept.

I stayed at a motel ten minutes away.

At three in the morning, I sat on the edge of the bed staring at Margaret’s confession letter.

I kept remembering our marriage.

Sunday pancakes.

Road trips.

Christmas mornings.

Her hand inside mine.

Had every moment been a lie?

No.

That would have been easier.

The truth was worse.

Margaret had genuinely loved me while repeatedly choosing to protect that love with deception.

The following morning, I returned to Claire’s house before Daniel arrived.

We agreed I would wait in the back room.

Claire wanted to tell him first.

At exactly 10:07, I heard the front door open.

“Mom?”

My son’s voice.

For the first time in my life, I heard my child call someone Mom.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Claire explained.

Not everything.

Just that she had found me.

That Margaret had died.

That I had never known he existed.

Silence followed.

Then Daniel laughed once.

A sharp, disbelieving sound.

“No.”

“Danny—”

“No. He knew.”

“He didn’t.”

“I went to his house.”

“Margaret lied to you.”

I heard movement.

“She told me he knew.”

“She lied to both of us.”

Another long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Where is he?”

Claire answered.

“In the next room.”

My entire body froze.

I stepped out.

Daniel turned.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

It felt like looking at a younger version of myself.

Not exactly.

But enough.

Same eyes.

Same way of holding tension in the jaw.

Same small scar above the eyebrow.

His came from childhood, perhaps.

Mine came from falling off a bicycle at nine.

“Daniel.”

His eyes filled.

“You’re really him.”

“Yes.”

He stared at me.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Not once?”

“Not until yesterday.”

He looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

I said the only words that mattered.

“If I had known, I would have come.”

Daniel’s face broke.

He turned away.

I wanted to hug him.

I didn’t.

That choice belonged to him.

After several minutes, he sat.

Then he looked at the wooden box.

“Where did you get that?”

“Margaret left it.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You know she came to see me.”

My heart jumped.

“The café?”

He nodded.

“About five years ago.”

“What did she want?”

“To know whether I had found you again.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Because by then I had discovered something about her.”

“What?”

He took a breath.

“Margaret didn’t meet you by accident.”

May you like

My skin went cold.

“She knew Claire before she ever met you.”
