Chapter 10 - THE LIE COLLEEN THOUGHT WOULD SAVE US

Colleen did not deny it.
She sat beside Julian’s hospital bed.
“I told Adrian you were pregnant.”
“Why?”
“To keep him hidden.”
I stared at her.
“You invented a baby.”
“Yes.”
“Why would that make him stay away?”
“Because Thomas had already threatened any future heir.”
Adrian looked at his mother.
“You told me Meredith’s doctor confirmed it.”
“I lied.”
His face hardened.
“I stayed dead because I thought coming home would endanger my child.”
“I know.”
“You watched me destroy her for a child that didn’t exist.”
“I thought grief was survivable.”
I laughed.
It sounded ugly.
“And betrayal?”
Colleen looked at me.
“I underestimated it.”
At least she admitted that.
Julian asked:
“Did you know about Rebecca?”
Colleen’s silence answered.
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew I was cheating?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was trying to keep you close to Langley.”
There it was.
Colleen had turned her sons’ lives into chess pieces because she believed survival mattered more than truth.
She was not evil.
That almost made it worse.
I stood.
“I need air.”
Adrian followed me into the hallway.
“Meredith.”
“No.”
“I need to say something.”
“You’ve had three months to practice.”
He absorbed the hit.
“I cheated before the crash.”
“Yes.”
“I chose Rebecca.”
“Yes.”
“I lied to both of you.”
“Yes.”
“I was a coward.”
That word stopped me.
Adrian had always been proud.
Controlled.
Never called himself weak.
“I loved you,” he said.
“No.”
His face changed.
“You loved being forgiven by me.”
Silence.
There.
The truth I had not understood until that moment.
Every time he worked late.
Every unexplained message.
Every flirtation I dismissed.
Every apology.
I had always been the safe place.
He had assumed safe meant permanent.
“I thought you would always be there,” he admitted.
“That isn’t love.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Now.”
I looked at him.
For once, he did not ask me to come back.
That mattered.
Owen interrupted.
“Senator Langley is moving.”
“Where?”
“Airport.”
Rebecca stood from the waiting room.
“My father’s running.”
Federal agents were alerted.
Langley’s private jet was stopped before takeoff.
The ledger.
My father’s recording.
Julian’s testimony.
Margaret’s statements.
Everything finally converged.
Thomas was arrested at the medical facility when he arrived trying to move Julian.
He did not resist.
He only stared at his son.
Julian looked away.
Then investigators opened Thomas’s briefcase.
Inside was a second passport.
Two plane tickets.
One for Thomas Parker.
One for Julian Cole.
I stared at the surname.
Cole.
My surname.
Why would Thomas create documents placing Julian in my family?
Owen found the answer in another folder.
My father, David Cole, had planned to adopt Julian legally if Thomas’s crimes were exposed.
May you like
Because David knew the truth about Julian’s paternity.
And Julian knew my father far better than I ever realized.
