Chapter 10 - The Weight of Justice

The courtroom broke into quiet whispers as Samantha stepped back from the podium and resumed her seat at the prosecution table.

Judge Thomas cleared his throat, his expression stern as he adjusted his glasses and looked down at the defense table.

"Evelyn Sterling," Judge Thomas began, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "In my thirty years on the judicial bench, I have rarely witnessed a crime characterized by such breathtaking wickedness, calculated greed, and sociopathic indifference to human life. You took the innocence of a five-year-old girl—your own granddaughter—and weaponized it for financial gain."

Evelyn's lips trembled, but she said nothing.

"On the count of attempted premeditated murder," Judge Thomas declared, "I sentence you to life in state prison, with the possibility of parole after twenty-five years. On the counts of conspiracy, child endangerment, and poisoning, I add an additional fifteen years, to be served consecutively. You will spend the remainder of your natural life behind bars."

Evelyn let out a choked sob, collapsing back into her chair as her defense attorney rubbed her shoulder hopelessly.

Judge Thomas then turned his cold gaze onto Brandon.

"Brandon Sterling," the judge continued. "You are a father. Your fundamental, sacred duty in this life was to protect your daughter from harm. Instead, out of cowardice and financial greed, you conspired with your mother to subject your innocent child to horrific physical torture for profit."

Brandon burst into tears, shaking his head pathetically. "Your Honor, please... I was manipulated—"

"Silence!" Judge Thomas barked, slamming his gavel down hard. "You are an adult man! You stood in that dining room and watched her swallow lethal objects! For your role in this appalling conspiracy, I sentence you to thirty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole for twenty years."

The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, thunderous CLANG that signaled the absolute end of the Sterling family's reign of terror.

Court officers immediately stepped forward, grabbing the chains attached to Brandon and Evelyn, and began marching them out through the side doors toward the holding cells. As Brandon was dragged away, he turned his head toward Samantha one last time, sobbing uncontrollably, begging for a forgiveness that would never come.

Samantha didn't blink. She watched them vanish behind the heavy steel doors, feeling a massive, suffocating weight lift off her shoulders forever.
