Chapter 12 - THE MOTHER WHO LEFT A MESSAGE

My mother's name was Eleanor Whitmore.
She was an architect.
Brilliant.
Patient.
The kind of woman who could look at an empty lot and imagine a beautiful building standing there.
She died nine years earlier.
Officially, from complications following a sudden illness.
I had been nineteen.
My father never recovered from losing her.
Now I was sitting in a room full of investigators, wondering whether her death had been connected to the same conspiracy that destroyed our family.
Roman stood beside me.
"You don't have to hear all of this today."
I shook my head.
"I've spent years not knowing. I want the truth."
Investigators searched the recovered archives.
They found a recording labeled:
ELEANOR WHITMORE — FINAL STATEMENT.
My breath caught.
Roman looked at me.
"Are you ready?"
I nodded.
The video began.
My mother appeared on-screen.
Her hair was tied back.
She wore the blue cardigan I remembered from childhood.
For a moment, I forgot everything else.
"Mom."
She looked directly into the camera.
"If Sloan ever sees this, I want her to know how proud I am of her."
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
My mother continued.
"Your father and I discovered something terrible inside the Halcyon project."
She looked frightened.
"We tried to expose it."
Her voice trembled.
"But Charles and Victoria found out."
I gripped Roman's hand.
"They threatened us. They said they'd destroy Henry's company if we spoke."
My mother paused.
Then looked down.
"I became ill after receiving treatment at a clinic connected to their organization."
She swallowed.
"I don't know whether what happened to me was deliberate. But I know the records were changed."
My chest tightened.
She continued.
"Henry has copies of everything. If anyone tries to take them, remember what I taught you about buildings."
Then she smiled faintly.
"The strongest foundation is the one nobody sees."
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
For years, I'd thought my mother died without leaving anything behind.
Now she'd given me a warning.
And a clue.
I looked at Roman.
"The foundation."
He frowned.
"What?"
"She wasn't speaking metaphorically."
I grabbed the Halcyon blueprint.
My mother had taught me architectural drafting.
She used to hide small notes in the margins of drawings.
I examined the foundation plan.
Then saw it.
A tiny handwritten symbol near the lowest supporting wall.
My mother's initials.
E.W.
Beside them were three numbers.
6-14-9.
Roman leaned closer.
"What does it mean?"
I remembered something my mother once told me.
Every architect has a favorite place to hide a secret.
Hers was always behind the sixth structural column.
I pointed toward the blueprint.
"Column six. Level B4. Section nine."
Roman stared.
"There's another chamber."
I nodded.
"And I think my parents hid the final evidence there."
Then Dominic's phone rang.
He listened.
His face changed.
"Boss, police located Henry Whitmore."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
Dominic swallowed.
"At the old medical center."
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
Relief almost knocked me to the floor.
Then Dominic added:
"But Preston is there."
May you like
I stared.
"And he says he wants to surrender."
