Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO CALLED ME DEAD

By 10:00 a.m., I had fifty-two missed calls.

At 10:06, I answered Mom.

Not because I was ready to forgive anything.

Because Evan told me to get information before lawyers instructed everyone to stop talking.

“Claire!”

She sounded frantic.

“What have you done?”

Interesting opening.

“Good morning, Mom.”

“You need to stop this audit immediately.”

“No.”

“Daniel’s wedding is today!”

“I’m aware.”

“The Vale family is demanding explanations!”

“Then explain.”

Silence.

“Explain what?”

“DMR Strategies.”

Her breathing changed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Your name is on the company.”

“That was paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

“Daniel needed a business entity.”

“And you gave him one.”

“He was building something.”

“With money borrowed against your house?”

She stopped.

I closed my eyes.

She knew.

“How much?”

“Claire—”

“How much did you borrow?”

“One hundred eighty thousand.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Daniel said the hotel family was going to bring him into consulting after the wedding.”

“So you mortgaged your home.”

“It was temporary.”

Every terrible financial decision seemed to come with that word.

“Did Dad know?”

“Yes.”

“And Lauren?”

“No.”

At least somebody had been excluded.

Then Mom’s voice sharpened.

“None of this gives you the right to humiliate your brother.”

I almost laughed.

“Three weeks ago, you told me you were going to tell people I was dead.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

“You were going to embarrass him.”

“By existing?”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

I looked through the conference-room window at twenty Bennett employees already working through audit requests.

“Explain it.”

Mom exhaled.

“The Vales are sophisticated people.”

“And cleaners aren’t?”

“Claire…”

“What exactly did you tell them about me?”

Silence.

I waited.

Finally:

“That you died.”

The words hurt even though I already knew.

“When?”

“During Daniel and Sophia’s engagement dinner.”

Sophia.

The bride.

I had met her only twice.

She seemed kind.

Now I understood why she never mentioned inviting me.

According to my mother, Richard Vale had casually asked Daniel whether he had siblings.

Daniel said:

“One sister. Lauren.”

Richard apparently frowned.

He knew there were two Reeves daughters.

He had met me in business meetings.

So Mom “fixed” the discrepancy.

She told them Claire had died several years earlier after a “difficult period.”

My stomach turned.

“What difficult period?”

“You know.”

“No, Mom.”

I said slowly.

“I really don’t.”

She whispered:

“We said addiction.”

I went completely still.

Of all things.

They had not merely erased me.

They had invented a tragic death that made my absence respectable.

“Why?”

“Daniel panicked.”

“And you helped.”

“Yes.”

Then she started crying.

I felt nothing.

“Claire, please stop the audit until after the wedding.”

“No.”

“He loves Sophia.”

“Then he should have treated her family honestly.”

“This will destroy everything.”

“No.”

I looked at the DMR ledger.

“It will reveal everything.”

I ended the call.

At 10:41, Richard Vale called.

His voice sounded very different now.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Would you like to tell me why Daniel Reeves informed my family that you died of an overdose three years ago?”

I closed my eyes.

“You heard.”

“I have spent two years sitting across conference tables from a dead woman.”

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

Richard did not.

Then he said:

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“Daniel knew Bennett Facility Solutions serviced our hotels.”

“That isn’t possible.”

“He may not have known you owned it.”

My pulse changed.

“What did he know?”

Richard emailed me a photograph.

Daniel standing inside Vale Grand’s flagship property six months earlier.

Beside him was our regional operations director.

And behind them—

the Bennett Facility Solutions logo was clearly visible.

Daniel had spent years mocking my “cleaning job.”

May you like

But at least six months before his wedding—

he had been inside one of the hotels my company managed.
