Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT I STOPPED RUNNING

For most of my life, someone else decided when I should run.
My mother sent me away.
Marcus chased me through the rain.
Adrien moved me between safe houses.
Reddick watched me from shadows.
That night, I stopped.
“Give me the drive.”
Adrien stared at me.
“No.”
“I have a plan.”
“No.”
“Then listen.”
Gunfire echoed downstairs.
Marco’s men held the lower floor.
Matteo had moved Evelyn and Nora into a reinforced room.
Reddick wanted one thing.
The archive.
More specifically, he wanted control over what became public.
“Give me a copy.”
Adrien understood.
“You want him to think it’s original.”
“Yes.”
“He’ll verify.”
“Not if the system opens.”
Nora looked at me.
“We can create a shell interface.”
“How long?”
“Ten minutes.”
“We have five.”
She smiled grimly.
“Then stop talking.”
For five minutes, Nora became terrifying.
Code.
Passwords.
Encryption.
A fake archive that opened enough files to look real.
Adrien hated the plan.
That reassured me.
It meant it was mine.
I walked downstairs carrying the drive.
Adrien stayed hidden with a clear line of sight.
Reddick stood in the great room.
Older than television made him look.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
No visible emotion.
He looked at me like a scientist studying a specimen.
“Lena.”
“Calvin.”
“You should call me something warmer.”
“You are not my father.”
His face changed.
“You tested.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“Daniel Moretti.”
Reddick laughed.
“Evelyn always did enjoy dangerous men.”
I wanted to strike him.
Instead I held up the drive.
“Let them go.”
“Your mother first?”
“Everyone.”
“Adrien too?”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“So predictable.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You spent years assuming everyone wanted what you wanted.”
“Power?”
“Control.”
His smile disappeared.
I handed him the drive.
He connected it to a laptop.
The interface opened.
Folders appeared.
His face changed.
Greed.
Relief.
Then Nora triggered the second system remotely.
Every real archive file began uploading.
Newsrooms.
Federal prosecutors.
State investigators.
International financial-crimes units.
Reddick’s phone began ringing.
Then another.
Then another.
His face went white.
“What did you do?”
I smiled.
“My mother built a contingency.”
He reached for me.
Adrien moved.
Fast.
One shot struck the wall.
Another man fell.
Marco’s team flooded the room.
Reddick grabbed my wrist.
Pain exploded.
For one second I was back with Marcus.
Bruised.
Afraid.
Owned.
No.
I drove my knee upward.
Reddick released me.
Adrien hit him.
Hard.
Then again.
“Adrien!”
He stopped.
Barely.
Reddick lay bleeding on the floor.
Adrien could have killed him.
Everyone knew it.
Instead, he stepped back.
“For her,” he said.
Not mercy for Reddick.
Choice for me.
Federal agents arrived fourteen minutes later.
Reddick was arrested.
Alive.
The archive became public enough to make silence impossible.
Judges resigned.
Executives were charged.
Police officials were suspended.
Old cases reopened.
And one file exposed something Matteo had never known.
Daniel Moretti had not died in a random robbery.
He had been killed on Reddick’s orders.
May you like
Because Daniel planned to leave New York with Evelyn.
And me.
