Chapter 1 - THE CODE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

:

The hallway remained silent after I sent the four-letter command.

ZERO.

Four seconds.

Five.

Then every phone in the corridor began vibrating.

Not one.

Not two.

All nine.

Richard Thorne stared at the screen in his hand.

His face changed first.

Then Jackson's.

Then the rest of the brothers.

One by one, the arrogant expressions disappeared.

I didn't smile.

I didn't celebrate.

My wife was upstairs fighting for her life.

Our daughter was gone.

And the men responsible were standing less than fifteen feet from me.

“What's happening?” Richard demanded.

Jackson looked at his phone.

“My accounts are frozen.”

Another brother swore.

“My warehouse just got sealed.”

A third looked at his screen.

“They terminated the shipping contracts.”

Richard turned toward me.

“What did you do?”

I stepped closer.

“Nothing you weren't warned about.”

He laughed nervously.

“You think money makes you powerful?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Information does.”

The doors at the end of the corridor opened.

Federal investigators walked in.

Behind them came financial crimes officers.

Then prosecutors.

The entire hallway filled with people carrying warrants.

Richard's voice cracked.

“You can't do this.”

The lead investigator looked directly at him.

“Mr. Thorne, you and eight members of your family are under investigation for aggravated assault, financial fraud, witness intimidation, conspiracy and attempted inheritance theft.”

Richard looked toward me.

“You set this up.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You did.”

He stepped forward.

“What inheritance?”

I glanced toward Elena's ICU room.

“Her inheritance.”

Jackson laughed.

“She'll never control anything.”

I looked at him.

“That is where you're wrong.”

The investigator opened a sealed folder.

“Ms. Thorne is the sole protected beneficiary of the Halcyon Legacy Trust.”

Richard went still.

That name had been hidden for twenty-seven years.

Even Elena had never known the full extent of it.

I did.

Because before I married her, I had been hired to investigate the Thorne family's financial structure.

I knew what they were hiding.

I knew why they wanted Elena's signature.

I knew why they had tried to isolate her from attorneys, physicians, and independent advisers.

But I had not known they would attack her.

That changed everything.

A nurse ran into the corridor.

“Mr. Sterling.”

I turned.

“Dr. Harrison needs you.”

My heart stopped.

I entered the ICU.

Elena looked impossibly small beneath the machines.

Her face was swollen.

Her hand rested beside her.

I touched it.

“I'm here.”

Her eyelids fluttered.

“Nathaniel?”

“Yes.”

Her lips moved.

“My baby…”

I swallowed the grief.

“I know.”

She closed her eyes.

“I couldn't protect her.”

“You didn't fail her.”

A tear slid down her cheek.

“They wanted the trust.”

“I know.”

“Don't let them take it.”

I leaned closer.

“They won't.”

Her fingers squeezed mine.

“There is something…”

“What?”

She struggled for breath.

“Under my mother's piano.”

I froze.

“Your mother's piano?”

She nodded.

“Something Dad never found.”

“What is it?”

Her eyes opened.

“My mother's letter.”

Then the monitor changed.

Doctors rushed in.

“Everyone out.”

I was pushed into the hallway.

The doors closed.

I stood there.

Motionless.

Under my coat, my secure phone vibrated.

One encrypted message.

Only four words.

THE WRONG MAN WAS ARRESTED.

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

RICHARD IS NOT THE ARCHITECT.

My blood went cold.

Someone else had ordered the attack.

Someone powerful enough to know about ZERO.

May you like

Someone who knew about Elena's mother's piano.

And someone who believed I still had no idea who I was actually fighting.
