Chapter 9 - THE EMPIRE THAT ENDED

Six months later, the Moretti empire was transformed.
Several executives were prosecuted.
Millions were returned to legitimate owners.
The stolen patents were transferred back to Nia's family trust.
Victor pleaded guilty to financial crimes and agreed to testify against others involved in the scheme.
Evelyn accepted responsibility for her role.
But Luca made the most unexpected decision.
He stepped down as CEO.
The board begged him to stay.
He refused.
“I spent too many years protecting a name instead of protecting my family.”
He sold several luxury properties.
He dissolved the private family office.
And he created a foundation in the twins' names.
Nia refused to let him simply give them money.
“Make it about education,” she said.
So he did.
The foundation funded scholarships for children whose parents had lost businesses because of corporate fraud.
Nia eventually launched her own company using her father's original technology.
She didn't need Luca's empire.
She built something smaller.
Something honest.
Something her children could understand.
On a warm Sunday afternoon, Luca arrived at Nia's house.
He carried no expensive gifts.
Only two paper bags.
The twins ran outside.
“Dad!”
Luca froze.
The word still seemed unbelievable.
He smiled.
“Hey, guys.”
Nia watched from the doorway.
Luca looked at her.
“Is it okay if I take them for ice cream?”
She smiled.
“Be back before dinner.”
The twins cheered.
As they drove away, Nia's phone buzzed.
A message from Eva.
There is one more thing you should know.
Nia opened it.
The message contained a photograph.
It showed Anthony Moretti standing beside Nia's father.
On the back was a handwritten date.
Twenty years before Nia met Luca.
And beneath it were five words:
WE PLANNED FOR THIS DAY.
Nia stared at the photograph.
Maybe the final secret had never been about money.
Maybe their fathers had known that one day, their children would uncover everything.
May you like
And perhaps the greatest inheritance they had left behind wasn't wealth.
It was the chance to choose truth.
