Chapter 10 - THE GUARD WHO SOLD THE SCHOOL ADDRESS

Daniel Cruz ran before Adrian could confront him.

That was almost an admission by itself.

His car was found abandoned near Stamford.

His phone remained inside.

One message had been deleted badly enough for investigators to recover it.

LILY LOCATION CONFIRMED.

Payment: $200,000.

Adrian felt sick.

He had trusted Cruz enough to bring him to Lily's hotel room.

Enough to stand beside him while examining Sofia's evidence.

Enough to move freely inside the estate.

Matteo looked worse.

“Cruz helped me twice.”

“While selling you the other ten times.”

Sofia rubbed her forehead.

“Can we please stop discovering trusted men are traitors?”

Teresa, passing with coffee, said, “Hire more women.”

Nobody argued.

Cruz was found the next morning.

He had gone to a marina.

Not to escape.

To meet Victor.

Federal agents arrested both men before either reached the boat.

Victor's charges multiplied quickly.

Conspiracy.

Financial crimes.

Kidnapping-related offenses.

Evidence tampering.

Potential homicide charges.

Cruz began negotiating within hours.

He had no loyalty left once the money disappeared.

His statement revealed how Sofia vanished.

Victor's men took her from the Connecticut safe house.

She escaped during a transfer.

Matteo pursued.

They had reached Adrian's estate minutes after Lily.

But Cruz had already warned Victor where the child was.

“Why didn't they attack the house directly?” Adrian asked.

Cruz's recorded interview answered.

“Victor didn't want Lily dead.”

Adrian went cold.

“Why?”

“She was leverage.”

Of course.

Against Adrian.

Against Sofia.

Against Matteo.

A child became useful simply because three adults loved her.

Adrian hated his world.

Then Cruz revealed one more thing.

Victor had ordered a DNA test years earlier.

He knew Adrian was Lily's father.

“How?”

Sofia's medical records.

The safe house doctor had secretly collected samples after Lily's birth.

Victor knew from the beginning.

He kept the secret because it was more valuable unopened.

Until now.

Adrian looked toward the garden where Lily was playing with Bernard the repaired rabbit.

She still didn't know.

That conversation couldn't be delayed forever.

But it wouldn't be used as a weapon.

Adrian asked Sofia and Matteo to sit with him that evening.

“We tell her.”

Sofia looked afraid.

“Now?”

“Before somebody else does.”

Matteo nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily sat on the living-room rug.

All three adults looked so serious she immediately frowned.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No,” Sofia said.

“Then why does everyone look weird?”

Adrian almost laughed.

Sofia took Lily's hands.

“We need to tell you something about your dad.”

Lily looked down.

“I don't have a dad.”

Adrian's chest tightened.

“You do.”

She looked at him.

Something in her face changed.

Children notice more than adults think.

Sofia explained gently.

No lies.

No unnecessary details.

There had been complicated adult mistakes before Lily was born.

Uncle Matt loved her.

But Adrian was her biological father.

Lily stared at Adrian.

For ten terrifying seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“Are you sure?”

Adrian nodded.

“Very.”

“Like doctor sure?”

“Yes.”

She considered.

“Okay.”

Adrian blinked.

“Okay?”

“You already have the ring.”

He looked at his hand.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Mommy said the man with the black ring would protect me.”

Sofia covered her mouth.

Lily continued.

“Can I still call him Uncle Matt?”

Matteo laughed through tears.

“I'd be offended if you didn't.”

Then she looked at Adrian.

“What do I call you?”

He had faced killers with less fear.

“Whatever you want.”

Lily thought.

“Adrian is weird.”

“Agreed.”

“Dad might be weird too.”

“Also agreed.”

She crawled closer.

“Can I try it later?”

His throat closed.

“Yes.”

She hugged him.

Just like that.

No ceremony.

No perfect movie speech.

A six-year-old deciding there might be room in her life for another person.

Later, after Lily slept, Sofia found Adrian alone in the kitchen.

“You did well.”

“I almost passed out.”

She smiled.

Then her expression changed.

“What?”

“I need to tell you something else.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Of course.”

Sofia sat.

“The night we were together…”

He waited.

“I wasn't as drunk as you thought.”

Adrian stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I already knew Matteo was pulling away because of Victor.”

“So?”

“I was hurt. Angry. And I made a choice too.”

She looked directly at him.

“I never told you because everyone acted as though that night was solely your mistake.”

Adrian said nothing.

Sofia continued.

“It wasn't.”

That truth mattered.

Then she added:

“And Matteo knows.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Before Lily was born.”

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

All these years, Matteo had protected a child conceived during the most painful week of his relationship.

And never once used it against Sofia or Adrian.

That might have been the greatest thing his brother had ever done.

Then Sofia whispered:

“That's why Victor hated Matteo most.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Matteo proved something Victor never understood.”

“What?”

May you like

“That loving someone doesn't require owning them.”

And Adrian realized that lesson might be the only chance their family had left.
