Chapter 12 - SOPHIE'S FATHER

Luca sat down.

Hard.

“What?”

Claire cried silently.

“Sophie is yours.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Adrian looked away.

This was not his moment.

Luca’s voice cracked.

“How?”

Claire laughed through tears.

“You were recovering. Not dead.”

“I know how babies happen.”

Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.

Claire continued.

Four years earlier, during Luca’s recovery, they grew close.

Not instantly.

Not conveniently.

Months.

Conversations.

Shared fear.

Then a relationship.

Brief.

Real.

When Claire learned she was pregnant, Luca panicked.

Vincent was still watching.

St. Agnes compromised.

He told her to leave.

She did.

He did not know about the pregnancy.

“I tried to tell you.”

“When?”

“Letters.”

“Which never came.”

Celia closed her eyes.

More intercepted mail.

Again.

Claire eventually chose silence.

Wrong.

She admitted it.

“I told myself Sophie was safer.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.”

“Yes.”

“I missed six years.”

“Yes.”

Claire did not defend herself.

Then Adrian understood the trust.

Antonio learned about Sophie somehow.

Maybe through Celia.

Maybe Claire.

He added her secretly.

That meant Antonio knew he had a granddaughter.

Luca did not.

The old man’s obsession with control survived even into affection.

Adrian felt tired.

Then Sophie’s voice came from the vault entrance.

“Why is everybody crying?”

Everyone turned.

Teresa stood behind her.

Furious.

“I told you she wasn’t coming.”

Sophie had apparently negotiated otherwise.

Again.

Claire ran to her.

Dropped to her knees.

They hugged.

Sophie buried her face in her mother’s neck.

“Mommy.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You disappeared.”

“I know.”

“You’re not allowed.”

“I know.”

Then Sophie looked over Claire’s shoulder at Luca.

The room held its breath.

She knew him.

“Uncle Luca.”

Luca’s eyes filled.

Claire stood.

“Sophie…”

The little girl looked between them.

Children notice.

“What?”

Claire crouched.

“We need to tell you something.”

Adrian almost left.

Then Sophie reached for his hand.

“Stay.”

So he did.

Claire explained simply.

Luca helped make Sophie.

He was her biological father.

Sophie listened.

Then frowned.

“So he’s not Uncle Luca?”

Luca laughed and cried at the same time.

“No.”

“What am I supposed to call you?”

He swallowed.

“Whatever you want.”

She thought.

“Luca.”

Fair.

Then:

“Maybe Dad later.”

Luca broke.

Adrian looked away again.

Afterward, counsel returned to documents.

Sophie’s beneficiary status mattered financially.

But more importantly, Hartman knew about it.

Samuel confirmed Hartman had referenced “the child contingency.”

If David Hartman could invalidate Luca’s incapacity challenge and maintain power of attorney, he might claim authority over trust structures affecting Sophie too.

That ended today.

They filed emergency petitions.

Independent guardian ad litem appointed for Sophie’s financial interests.

No family self-dealing.

No shortcuts.

Then Marco received a call.

David Hartman had surfaced.

Not fled.

He scheduled a press conference.

He intended to release Antonio’s crimes publicly unless Adrian agreed to sell Hartman a controlling stake.

Blackmail.

Clear.

Documented.

And for the first time in the entire story, Adrian smiled.

May you like

Because Antonio’s crimes were already in Vault 317.

And Adrian had already sent copies to counsel.
