Chapter 11 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER EXAMINED ME

I had met Dr. Howard Lane once.
At Diane’s birthday party.
We spoke for maybe seven minutes.
He had never treated me.
Never evaluated me.
Never reviewed my medical records.
Yet someone had drafted a document under his name describing my mental condition in detail.
Priya contacted his attorney.
His response came quickly.
Dr. Lane denied writing it.
He also denied authorizing anyone to use his name.
Then he revealed something important.
Diane had asked him, hypothetically, whether severe work stress could affect someone’s financial judgment.
He thought she was asking about herself.
She was apparently building a story about me.
I sat in silence after the call.
For the first time, I understood how far they were willing to go.
The empty plate had not been petty cruelty.
It had been bait.
They needed me furious.
Screaming.
Throwing something.
Anything that could become a story later.
Claire lost control.
Claire became unstable.
Claire cannot manage money.
But I had smiled.
Stood.
Left.
That one decision may have protected me more than I knew.
Three days later, legal notices went out.
The disputed home-equity loan was formally challenged.
The forged signature issue was documented.
My attorney moved to protect my interests in the marital property.
My personal consulting accounts were secured.
The trust remained untouched.
I did not drain joint money.
I did not destroy Mark financially.
I simply stopped funding the people who had been exploiting me.
That was when the phone calls became desperate.
Diane called from six numbers.
Vanessa texted constantly.
Daniel sent one message.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE STARTING.
I forwarded it to Priya.
Mark moved into an extended-stay hotel.
Then the mortgage lender called.
Not Diane’s lender.
Mine.
The home-equity loan had triggered an internal review.
Something unusual had surfaced.
The loan officer who processed it had overridden two verification requirements.
His name was Daniel Reynolds.
No surprise.
But another override had come from a senior manager.
Someone unrelated to the Reynolds family.
Priya found him.
Thomas Hale.
I had heard that name before.
Then it hit me.
Thomas Hale had attended our wedding.
May you like
He was Diane’s former boyfriend.
And financial records showed Diane had sent him $30,000 two weeks after my fraudulent loan closed.
