Chapter 5 - THE DNA TEST

:

Julian demanded a DNA test.

Not because he doubted I was his wife.

Because he knew something about my birth that I didn't.

Marcus arranged a private laboratory.

I submitted samples.

So did my mother.

The results arrived forty-eight hours later.

I opened the report alone.

The first line made my hands tremble.

Evelyn Carter — biological mother: CONFIRMED.

I nearly laughed with relief.

Then I read the second line.

Richard Carter — biological father: NOT CONFIRMED.

I stopped breathing.

No.

That was impossible.

My father had raised me.

Loved me.

Protected me.

I read it again.

Marcus entered.

“What happened?”

I handed him the report.

He stared.

“Mara.”

She walked in.

I held out the paper.

She closed her eyes.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“Who is my father?”

She whispered:

“Richard Thorne.”

Silence.

“Julian's grandfather?”

“Yes.”

The room disappeared.

I staggered backward.

“No.”

Mara explained the truth.

My mother had been secretly involved with Richard Thorne before marrying my father.

I was born from that relationship.

Richard had never publicly acknowledged me.

Instead, my father had raised me.

When Richard died, he left a private trust for me.

My father's later involvement had been designed to protect it.

That meant the Thorne Family Heritage Trust had always been mine by blood.

But it also meant I was technically part of the family Julian belonged to.

My head spun.

“Does Julian know?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Richard told his son.”

“His son?”

“Julian's father.”

That explained everything.

Julian hadn't married me by accident.

He had known from the beginning.

He had married me because my blood made me the true heir.

I felt sick.

“Then why did he steal from me?”

“To activate the trust.”

I stared.

“What?”

Mara nodded.

“He needed you to appear financially compromised.”

“Why?”

“So he could challenge your ownership and claim he had been rescuing family assets from mismanagement.”

Marcus frowned.

“That doesn't explain the abuse.”

“No,” Mara said.

“That was personal.”

She looked at me.

“Julian believed if you became afraid enough, you'd sign everything over voluntarily.”

I felt rage spread through my body.

He had planned the entire thing.

The money.

The arguments.

My mother.

The theft.

Everything.

Then Marcus found another document.

A marriage agreement.

Signed before our wedding.

It stated that Julian would receive twenty percent of the trust if he remained married to me for seven years.

Seven years.

We had been married exactly seven years.

My blood turned cold.

He hadn't been waiting for love.

He had been waiting for the clock.

The transfer date was today.

At midnight.

“If he was able to trigger the clause…”

Marcus nodded.

“He could have claimed twenty percent.”

“But we left the penthouse.”

“Which means the agreement may be invalid.”

I smiled.

“For the first time, I hope his obsession with paperwork destroys him.”

We filed for emergency injunction.

The judge granted a temporary freeze.

Then Julian's attorney arrived.

He brought a stack of documents.

“Mr. Thorne contests the trust.”

On what grounds?

He handed Marcus the filing.

Fraudulent paternity.

Julian claimed my father had falsified my identity.

He claimed I was not legally entitled to inherit.

Marcus looked at me.

“We need proof.”

“Of what?”

“That your father knew who your biological father was.”

“How?”

My mother suddenly spoke.

“I have it.”

She opened an old wooden box.

Inside was a photograph.

Richard Thorne.

My mother.

And my infant self.

On the back, in Richard's handwriting:

My daughter. My blood. My responsibility.

My heart broke.

He had known.

Everyone had known.

Except me.

Then my mother handed me another piece of paper.

A letter from my father.

I knew she was his daughter. I chose to raise her anyway.

I started crying.

My father had known I wasn't his biological daughter.

And he had loved me anyway.

Julian had spent seven years trying to weaponize blood.

My father had spent my entire life proving blood wasn't what made a family.

I wiped my eyes.

“Marcus.”

“Yes?”

“File the letter.”

He nodded.

Then his phone rang.

He listened.

His face changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Cassandra Vale is in custody.”

“Where?”

“New York.”

“Why did she surrender?”

He shook his head.

“She asked for you.”

I stared.

“What does she want?”

Marcus swallowed.

“She says Julian is planning to kill someone.”

May you like

“Who?”

“Your mother.”
