Chapter 11 - The Board Meeting They Thought I Would Miss

Monday morning arrived with one hundred cameras outside Mercer Biomedical headquarters.

Somebody had leaked the takeover.

Somebody had also leaked the cake video.

My ruined wedding face appeared on television screens beside headlines about corporate warfare.

I nearly stayed home.

Then I remembered Derek whispering:

Smile. Don't embarrass me.

So I wore a cream pantsuit.

No veil.

No ring.

And walked through the front doors at 8:47 a.m.

Lena beside me.

Ethan behind us.

At 9:00, the board meeting began.

Thomas Reed sat at the far end of the table.

He looked calm.

That angered me more than panic would have.

"Claire," he said warmly. "I'm sorry about your wedding."

"Are you?"

His smile weakened.

My father took his chair.

Colin Vance was present remotely as an observer based on a pending acquisition proposal.

Patricia wasn't supposed to attend.

Yet five minutes later, she entered with counsel.

Thomas looked surprised.

Good.

Apparently their alliance had cracks.

The meeting began.

Thomas immediately moved to challenge my voting authority based on the pending marital share transfer.

My attorney responded with the court's temporary restraining order freezing every disputed transaction.

Thomas's expression changed.

"On what grounds?"

"Fraud."

One word.

The room shifted.

Then Lena distributed evidence packets.

Altered PDFs.

Shell companies.

Patricia's financing.

Thomas's emails.

The proposed removal of my father.

Thomas stared at Patricia.

"You gave them this?"

She laughed.

"Apparently your backup plan was Derek."

Colin's screen went dark.

He disconnected.

Coward.

Thomas pushed back from the table.

"These communications are being misrepresented."

I spoke.

"Then explain CD Marital Holdings."

"No knowledge."

"We have your office registration."

"Clerical."

"Explain the email telling Patricia to make me emotionally dependent."

His face tightened.

"Fabricated."

"Explain the board resolution prepared before my wedding."

Nothing.

Then my father placed the twenty-one-year-old warehouse video on the screen.

Thomas finally lost color.

"Where did you get that?"

Dad leaned forward.

"So you recognize it."

Thomas looked toward the doors.

Company security stood outside.

Not police.

We weren't staging some dramatic arrest.

We were documenting.

Protecting the company.

Letting actual investigators handle crimes.

Thomas stood.

"This meeting is over."

"No," I said.

"For you, maybe."

I introduced a motion to remove Thomas from all executive authority pending investigation.

The vote required a supermajority.

My shares mattered.

My father's mattered.

Three independent directors voted yes.

One abstained.

Patricia unexpectedly raised her hand.

Everyone stared.

She still owned no Mercer shares.

But she held proxy authority over a small block Thomas had secretly transferred to her holding company.

He hadn't disclosed it.

Her vote gave us what we needed.

Thomas stared at her.

"What are you doing?"

Patricia smiled.

"Surviving."

Even now, she remained Patricia.

The motion passed.

Thomas was finished.

At least inside Mercer.

He turned toward me before leaving.

"You think your father is innocent?"

My stomach tightened.

Dad stood.

"Thomas."

Thomas ignored him.

He looked only at me.

"Ask Edward why Robert called him to the warehouse that night."

I already knew.

Because Robert wanted help.

Thomas smiled.

"No."

Then he delivered the secret my father had never told me.

"Robert wasn't calling to expose Patricia."

He pointed at Dad.

"He was calling to sell Edward the evidence."

I turned toward my father.

"What does that mean?"

Dad's face changed.

Thomas laughed.

"Your father knew about the stolen equipment months before Robert died."

Silence.

"And instead of reporting it, Edward tried to buy the evidence and bury the scandal."

I looked at Dad.

"Is that true?"

His eyes dropped.

That was enough.

We had removed one liar from the board.

And discovered another was sitting at its head.
