Chapter 8 - THE TEST VANESSA WAS ORDERED TO CREATE

Vanessa had not cut my hair because she hated me.

Not entirely.

She had been testing Adrian.

Testing whether he would protect me.

Whether I mattered.

Whether the old Bennett-Cole secret could control him.

Adrian understood before I did.

“My engagement was leverage.”

Michael nodded.

“Charles wanted your shipping alliance.”

“And Nora?”

“A second lever.”

Adrian’s expression turned cold.

“If I defended her, he’d know I could be emotionally manipulated.”

I almost laughed.

“Congratulations. Apparently I’m a strategic weakness.”

Adrian looked at me.

“No.”

Something in his voice made me stop.

“You’re a person he thought I would treat like an object.”

Neither of us looked away.

Michael cleared his throat.

“We need the original ledger.”

Adrian searched the estate records remotely.

Thomas’s old office had been renovated years ago.

Walls removed.

Floor replaced.

But one detail remained.

His father’s private wine cellar.

We flew back that night.

The mansion looked different now.

Not like a workplace.

Like a crime scene built over decades.

Adrian led us downstairs.

Behind a rack of Bordeaux was a steel panel.

A fingerprint lock.

Dead.

Michael noticed an old mechanical keyhole.

I tried Rose’s storage key.

Wrong.

Then I remembered my grandmother’s Bible.

Inside the cover was a tiny silver cross I had worn as a child.

It detached.

The end was shaped like a key.

I stared.

“My grandmother gave me this when I was twelve.”

Adrian took one breath.

“Try it.”

The lock clicked.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

One book.

Black leather.

No title.

The Black Ledger.

Michael opened it.

Pages of names.

Payments.

Routes.

Officials.

Charles Whitmore.

Eleanor Cole.

Thomas Cole.

Then a name Adrian did not expect.

Adrian Cole.

He froze.

“I was seventeen.”

The payment was dated the year his father died.

$2.4 million.

Beneficiary trust.

Adrian shook his head.

“I never received this.”

Michael read the notation.

Settlement - accidental death.

The room went cold.

Adrian’s father had supposedly died of a heart attack.

Not an accident.

“What accident?” I asked.

Michael turned pages.

Then stopped.

Thomas Cole.

Death compensation.

Authorized by Charles Whitmore.

Adrian stared.

“My father was murdered.”

Michael said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Another page listed the method.

Vehicle brake failure.

Adrian sat down hard.

His father had died in a car crash?

No.

That was the official story before Eleanor changed it to a heart attack in later family narratives.

Even Adrian’s memories had been rewritten.

I touched the page.

“Who drove the car?”

Michael searched.

A note.

Vehicle assigned to H. Monroe.

Helen.

My stomach twisted.

Again.

Adrian called her immediately.

She answered crying.

“Yes?”

“Were you driving my father the night he died?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Was it an accident?”

Helen whispered:

“No.”

“Did you know the brakes were cut?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Another silence.

Then she said:

“Your mother.”

Adrian’s hand shook.

But Helen kept talking.

“She was supposed to be in the car too.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“She got out five minutes before Thomas left.”

My heart stopped.

Adrian understood.

Eleanor knew.

She let her husband drive to his death.

But Helen added something else.

“Adrian… your father wasn’t alone.”

He stared at the phone.

“Who was with him?”

Helen began crying harder.

“Rose.”

My grandmother had been in the car that killed Thomas Cole.

And she survived.
