Chapter 7 - Handcuffs and Indictments

The double heavy oak doors of the bank's executive wing swung wide open.
Four armed officers from the Portland Police Department, flanked by two lead detectives from the Oregon State Financial Crimes Division and my attorney, Rebecca Sloan, marched directly into the glass consultation suite.
"Nobody move!" Detective Marcus Miller commanded, his voice thundering through the room.
Daniel stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the mahogany desk, his face turning an ash-gray color. "What... what is this?! This is a private family meeting!"
"Daniel Whitaker, Linda Whitaker, and Robert Whitaker," Detective Miller declared, pulling three sets of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest."
Linda let out a high-pitched, piercing shriek. "Arrest?! On what grounds?! We haven't done anything wrong! Call our lawyer!"
"You are under arrest for First-Degree Identity Theft, Bank Fraud, Corporate Forgery, Grand Larcenary, and Criminal Conspiracy," Detective Miller announced coldly.
Two uniformed officers stepped forward.
CLICK-CLACK.
The cold steel cuffs locked tightly around Daniel’s wrists. He thrashed and screamed, looking franticly toward the bank lobby where dozens of customers were filming the entire scene on their smartphones.
"Clara! Tell them to stop!" Daniel shrieked, tears of sheer, pathetic terror finally spilling down his cheeks. "I'm your husband! You can't do this to me! Think about our marriage! Think about our reputation!"
"Our marriage ended the moment you forged my name to pay off your mother's gambling debts, Daniel," I said, standing tall and unbowed as the officers forced his arms behind his back.
Simultaneously, the second officer grabbed Robert’s arms, twisting them behind his back, clicking the cuffs around his wrists while Robert cursed and shouted threats. Linda collapsed onto her knees on the carpet, sobbing hysterically, her designer coat rumpled, her high-society mask completely destroyed.
"Wait! I didn't know anything about the loans!" Megan screamed, raising her hands in panic as a female officer approached her. "It was Daniel and my mom! They told me Clara approved everything! Don't arrest me!"
"You're coming with us for questioning, Miss Whitaker," the female officer barked, pulling Megan up by her elbow.
As the police dragged Daniel, Linda, and Robert through the grand marble lobby in heavy chains—past the strobing flashbulbs of local news reporters who had arrived outside—Daniel turned his head toward me one last time.
His eyes were filled with raw, pathetic, and desperate pleading.
I did not turn away. I stood beside Rebecca Sloan, holding my head high, watching my husband and his toxic family being loaded into the back of armored police transport vans.

The heavy steel doors slammed shut with a sharp, final THUD.
The storm was over. Justice had arrived.
