Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WASN'T JUST HIS MISTRESS

Sabrina Vale was forty-one.

Polished.

Smart.

Former strategy consultant.

She had started Horizon Strategy Group five years earlier.

On paper, the work looked legitimate.

Market studies.

Acquisition targets.

Competitor research.

Some reports actually existed.

That mattered.

But the invoices were enormous.

Several projects duplicated work performed internally.

Others could not be supported at all.

Then Gideon discovered Douglas and Sabrina’s relationship began three years earlier.

Not three months.

Three years.

During those same years, Horizon’s payments tripled.

Gwen sat beside her attorney when the timeline appeared.

She did not cry.

“I spent those years apologizing because I thought I had become boring.”

Nobody knew what to say.

Then corporate investigators found personal transfers from Horizon to a real-estate LLC.

That LLC bought a condo in Aspen.

Owners:

Douglas Palmer.

Sabrina Vale.

Purchase price:

$4.9 million.

Gwen laughed once.

“The cars belong to the company. The house belongs to his mother. And apparently the secret condo belongs to his mistress.”

Her attorney almost smiled.

Then something more serious surfaced.

Horizon had paid Douglas $2.4 million in “referral fees.”

Douglas claimed those payments related to opportunities he introduced outside Sterling-Palmer.

Maybe some did.

But none had been disclosed to Gideon or the board.

The company suspended Douglas pending full review.

Employees panicked.

Gwen hated that.

“This cannot become eight hundred people losing jobs because my marriage collapsed.”

Gideon looked at her.

“You still think this is your marriage?”

She understood.

It was not anymore.

The marriage opened the door.

The company problems had existed independently.

Then Sabrina requested cooperation through counsel.

She knew Douglas was in trouble.

And apparently she had just discovered something herself.

He had promised to marry her.

Told her Gwen refused divorce.

Told her Gwen had secretly taken millions out of the company.

Told her Gwen was financially abusive.

Same architecture.

Different woman.

Sabrina handed investigators messages.

Douglas:

Once Gwen signs, everything clears.

Sabrina:

Signs what?

Douglas:

Founder release. House release. Support waiver.

Sabrina:

She agreed?

Douglas:

She will.

Gwen stared.

Douglas had been preparing documents he expected her to surrender under pressure.

Then Sabrina produced a draft settlement Douglas gave her.

It said Gwen would waive all corporate claims for $200,000 and twelve months of support.

Gwen’s attorney shook his head.

“He thought you’d sign this?”

Gwen knew exactly why.

Because three weeks earlier she had believed she was homeless.

Then Sabrina revealed the final secret.

Douglas had promised her control of Sterling-Palmer after Gideon retired.

But there was a problem.

May you like

Gideon had no intention of retiring.

Douglas had been preparing to force him out too.
