Chapter 11 - DANIEL’S BETRAYAL

Melissa locked the office door.

“Neither of you leaves this room.”

Through the frosted glass, I could see two shadows in the reception area.

Nathan.

Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel had found me.

Worse, he had brought Nathan.

Rachel whispered, “I told you.”

“You didn’t tell me Daniel was involved.”

“I didn’t know how much.”

Melissa stepped into the hallway while Rachel and I remained inside.

We couldn’t hear everything, but Nathan’s voice rose.

“She’s my wife.”

Melissa answered calmly.

“And she is represented by counsel.”

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“I need to talk to Emily.”

Melissa came back five minutes later.

“Nathan left.”

“And Daniel?”

“Still here.”

I didn’t want to see him.

But I needed answers.

Melissa allowed Daniel into the conference room.

He looked miserable.

Rachel refused to sit.

“You told him,” I said.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“He walked in with you.”

“Because he followed me.”

Rachel scoffed.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I texted Nathan after graduation.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

“Because I panicked.”

He admitted that months earlier, Nathan had asked him to keep quiet about the financial aid investigation.

Nathan claimed everything was a misunderstanding involving confidential scholarship arrangements.

Daniel believed him.

Then, two weeks ago, Daniel accidentally saw divorce papers in Nathan’s bag.

Nathan told him he planned to end the marriage after graduation.

“When I saw you today, I couldn’t stay quiet anymore,” Daniel said.

“So why text him?”

“Because after you left, he asked if I had spoken to you. I lied. Then he threatened me.”

“With what?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

During third year, Daniel had made a medication documentation mistake during a clinical rotation.

Nobody was harmed.

But Nathan had a photograph of the original chart.

If reported without context, it could delay Daniel’s residency credentialing.

“Nathan said if I helped you, he’d send it.”

Rachel stared at him.

“So you warned him.”

“I told him Emily knew about the scholarship. That’s all.”

I wanted to hate him.

But fear makes cowards out of people who thought they were brave.

I had spent years learning that lesson.

Then Daniel reached into his pocket.

“I came here because there’s something else.”

He handed Melissa a small digital recorder.

“What is this?” she asked.

“Last night’s residency dinner.”

Daniel had recorded Nathan because he was already suspicious.

On the audio, Nathan’s voice was unmistakable.

He was talking to another man.

Charles Harlan.

Nathan laughed and said:

By tomorrow evening, Emily won’t be my problem anymore.

Charles replied:

Good. Once she signs, destroy anything linking her to the foundation account.

Nobody spoke.

Then Nathan added one final sentence.

“And Rachel?”

Charles answered quietly.

“We dealt with her once.”

Rachel went pale.

The recording continued.

“So what happens if she comes back?”

There was a pause.

Then Charles said:

“Make sure she doesn’t.”
