Chapter 6 - THE REPORT THAT DISAPPEARED AFTER THE CRASH

Maintenance Report 47-B existed.
We found references to it in three other files.
But the report itself was missing from company archives.
Vance Aviation retained outside maintenance contractors.
Eight years earlier, Nicholas’s helicopter had been inspected forty-eight hours before the fatal flight.
Report 47-B involved the rotor gearbox.
I knew almost nothing about helicopters.
The independent aviation expert we hired did.
His face changed when he read the references.
“If these notes are accurate, that aircraft should probably have been grounded pending further inspection.”
My stomach turned.
The official accident investigation blamed catastrophic mechanical failure.
Not sabotage.
No evidence of intentional tampering.
But if someone had ignored a known warning, Nicholas might have died because profit or scheduling mattered more than safety.
Who cleared the flight?
The operations director.
Who pressured the operations director because Nicholas needed to reach Boston for a major acquisition meeting?
Victor’s office.
Not murder.
Something more ordinary.
Negligence.
Arrogance.
A decision made by people who believed tomorrow would forgive today.
Camila knew part of it.
“When did you see 47-B?”
“The morning after the crash.”
“Where?”
“Victor’s office.”
My attorney looked at her.
“Did he destroy it?”
“I never saw him destroy anything.”
Important distinction.
“What happened?”
“He said the report was preliminary and inaccurate.”
“And you accepted that?”
“I was twenty-six.”
“So was Nicholas.”
She lowered her eyes.
Then Camila admitted why she attacked Rose.
Rose had discovered a photocopy of 47-B inside Nicholas’s old document case.
Camila recognized it.
She panicked.
“If Rose gave that to you, everything would reopen.”
“That was the point.”
“I know.”
“Why move her after she hit the mirror?”
“I thought she was dead.”
The room went silent.
“I panicked.”
“And instead of calling an ambulance, you tried to hide her.”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
At least she had stopped manufacturing them.
Our engagement ended that afternoon.
No dramatic ring throw.
She placed the ring on the conference table.
“I did love you.”
I looked at her.
“That may be true.”
She flinched.
It was probably the hardest answer I could give.
Love does not erase what someone chooses when afraid.
Then Michael’s forensic team recovered an archived backup from a retired company server.
Report 47-B.
The document warned:
METALLIC CONTAMINATION DETECTED. AIRCRAFT SHOULD REMAIN OUT OF SERVICE UNTIL GEARBOX INSPECTION COMPLETED.
Below it was an electronic override.
Aircraft returned to service.

VICTOR VANCE.
My uncle had personally authorized the helicopter that killed Nicholas to fly despite a written maintenance warning.
