Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE MY MOTHER FINALLY MADE

The warehouse had been empty for nine years.

Police surrounded it before any of us entered.

Samuel had nowhere safe to go.

That didn't make him harmless.

Negotiators established contact.

He wanted one thing.

The vault code.

Caterina possessed half.

Page twenty-seven contained the other half.

Alina and I remained behind the police line while officers worked.

I hated every second.

Then Samuel called my phone.

“Dante.”

“What do you want?”

“Your wife.”

My entire body went cold.

Alina heard him through the speaker.

“No.”

Samuel laughed.

“She is the legal key to the Hartwell archive.”

“You already have my mother.”

“Caterina cannot authorize access.”

Alina stepped closer.

“What happens if you don't get access?”

Silence.

Then Samuel said, “Mrs. Moretti, you always were smarter than your husband.”

I almost smiled despite myself.

Alina continued.

“The accounts are already being investigated. Your daughter will be questioned. Adrian has records. Sofia is alive. You don't need the archive to know you're finished.”

For the first time, Samuel lost his calm.

“You know nothing.”

“I know you spent years engineering a divorce because you were afraid of two people communicating honestly.”

Silence.

Then Alina added:

“And you almost succeeded.”

My chest tightened.

“Almost,” she repeated.

Samuel hung up.

Minutes later, officers reported movement.

A side door opened.

Caterina appeared.

Alone.

She walked slowly toward police.

Then a gunshot cracked inside the warehouse.

I moved before anyone could stop me.

Officers shouted.

Alina grabbed my sleeve.

“Dante!”

Caterina fell.

My heart stopped.

But she hadn't been shot.

She had dropped deliberately.

Officers pulled her to safety.

Then tactical teams entered.

The next fifteen minutes felt like hours.

Finally:

“Suspect in custody.”

I closed my eyes.

Alina pressed her forehead against my shoulder.

Samuel Klein was arrested.

No dramatic execution.

No revenge.

No bloodbath.

Just handcuffs.

Evidence.

And the beginning of accountability.

Caterina suffered only a sprained wrist.

At the hospital, she refused pain medication until she spoke to me.

I stood beside her bed.

Luca remained near the window.

“You chose the company over Father,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You let Samuel stay close to us.”

“Yes.”

“You suspected Alina was being targeted.”

Her face broke.

“I didn't understand how far he'd go.”

“That doesn't excuse it.”

“I know.”

I had never heard my mother say those words.

She looked toward Alina.

“I am sorry.”

Alina didn't immediately forgive her.

I loved her for that.

Finally, my wife said:

“I hope someday I believe you.”

Caterina nodded.

“That is more than I deserve.”

Then she handed me page twenty-seven.

The cipher led investigators to my father's final archive.

The files contained evidence of Samuel's network.

Enough for prosecutions.

Enough to clear Sofia.

Enough to recover millions.

But among the evidence was a personal envelope.

For Dante and Alina.

Together.

We opened it that night.

My father's final letter was short.

If you are reading this, then you stayed together long enough to find the truth.

Alina looked at me.

I kept reading.

But do not stay together because I asked you to.

My throat tightened.

Stay only if, once every contract is stripped away, you choose each other.

Then came the final line.

And Dante, for once in your life, tell the woman how you feel before a lawyer does it for you.

Alina laughed through tears.

I stared at the letter.

Then at my wife.

There was one secret left.

May you like

Mine.

And I had been hiding it for three years.
