Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY TRUST

Margaret’s brother, Thomas, had left money in trust for his grandchildren.
Daniel had been named temporary financial administrator because he worked in corporate accounting.
No one questioned it.
Why would they?
He was family.
According to Daniel, the $150,000 was supposed to be moved only temporarily.
He planned to return it before the annual trust review.
Instead, DNB’s failed property deal swallowed the money.
Margaret looked physically ill.
“That money belongs to Lily and Jack.”
Her brother’s grandchildren.
Two children.
Daniel whispered, “I know.”
“You stole from children.”
“I borrowed it.”
Robert stood.
“No.”
His voice shook with fury.
“You keep calling theft borrowing.”
Daniel looked toward the door.
My attorney stepped aside.
She was not holding him there.
No one was.
That mattered.
Daniel could leave whenever he wanted.
But if he left, he left without anyone accepting another excuse.
He stayed.
For the next hour, everything came out.
The affair.
The secret apartment.
The loans.
The company losses.
The forged separation agreement.
The refinancing plan.
Daniel admitted signing my name on one document.
He denied others.
He claimed panic.
Pressure.
Fear.
Every explanation boiled down to one thing.
He wanted to preserve the version of himself everyone admired.
Successful husband.
Smart investor.
Dependable son.
Rescuer of Vanessa.
The truth was that everyone around him had been paying for that image.
Finally, Vanessa stood.
“I’m done.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“I’m done.”
“You’re pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“With my child.”
“Yes.”
His voice softened.
“Then we need to figure this out together.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“We will figure out parenting. Not us.”
His face twisted.
“You came into my life knowing I was married.”
“And you came into mine with forged divorce papers.”
That ended it.
Vanessa walked out.
Mark followed several minutes later after telling Daniel his attorney would contact him.
My attorney gathered the documents.
Robert went upstairs.
Soon only Margaret, Daniel and I remained.
Daniel looked at me like he finally understood what he had lost.
“Emily.”
I waited.
“Can we talk alone?”
Margaret looked at me.
I nodded.
She left.
Daniel sat across from me.
“I loved you.”
Past tense.
Maybe he realized it too late.
I said, “Maybe you did.”
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t plan for any of this.”
“Yes, you did.”
He flinched.
“Not at first.”
“No. You planned one lie. Then another. Then another.”
He lowered his head.
I thought there was nothing left to discover.
Then Daniel whispered:
“There’s something you should know before your lawyer finds it.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?”
“The life insurance policy.”
I went still.
“What policy?”
May you like
He looked ashamed.
“The one I took out on you last year.”
