Chapter 1 - THE MESSAGE CAROL NEVER EXPECTED ME TO SEE

I read Carol’s message twice.
Did Allison notice the transfer?
Please don’t let this ruin the trip for Jenna. We agreed you’d explain after your bonus.
Nathan reached for the phone.
I pulled it against my chest.
“No.”
“Allison, please.”
“No.”
Another contraction tightened across my stomach.
The fetal monitor continued its steady rhythm beside me.
Our daughter was fine.
Everything else suddenly felt broken.
“You told me this was your decision.”
Nathan looked away.
“It was.”
“Your mother just said we agreed.”
“She means she and I.”
I stared at him.
“That is not we.”
He closed his eyes.
I opened his text thread with Carol.
There were hundreds of messages.
Most were ordinary.
Then I searched:
Hawaii.
The first message appeared nine days earlier.
CAROL: I found the package. If we book tonight, it saves almost $2,000.
NATHAN: Allison will never agree to fifteen grand right before the baby.
CAROL: Then replace it with your bonus before she has to know.
My hands went cold.
Another:
NATHAN: I hate doing this behind her back.
CAROL: You sold your motorcycle for that account. Some of the money is yours.
Another:
CAROL: Allison controls everything because she’s better with numbers. That doesn’t mean she gets the final say every time.
I looked at Nathan.
“Did you tell her I control you?”
“No.”
“She thinks I do.”
“I complained once.”
“About what?”
He said nothing.
I kept scrolling.
Then I found a message from Nathan.
NATHAN: I’ll move the money Thursday. I changed the bank alerts so she won’t see the transfer notification.
I stopped breathing.
“You changed the alerts?”
Nathan’s face collapsed.
“I knew you’d see it.”
“So you deliberately hid it.”
“Yes.”
That word changed the room.
This wasn’t a bad impulse.
It wasn’t a misunderstanding.
It was a plan.
I opened the banking app.
Nathan moved closer.
“What are you doing?”
“Changing the password.”
“Allison—”
“It’s a joint account.”
“Yes.”
“And you just proved joint access does not mean joint consent.”
I transferred what remained of the BABY BUFFER into a new savings account at the same bank under my name only.
Not to steal from Nathan.
To protect the money intended for my recovery and our daughter while we figured out what had happened.
Then I texted my older sister, Rachel.
I need you at the hospital.
No questions.
She replied within ten seconds.
On my way.
Nathan sat beside the window with both hands covering his face.
I should have felt powerful.
I didn’t.
I felt exhausted.
Then his phone buzzed again.
Carol.
This time the preview said:
Just don’t tell her about the other transfers.
I looked at Nathan.
Slowly.
May you like
“What other transfers?”
His face told me I had just discovered the Hawaii trip was not the first time he had taken our money for his mother.
