Chapter 7 - ROOM 1108

At 3:11 a.m., we entered the Grand Halcyon through the service garage.

No chandeliers.

No orchestra.

No donors.

Just fluorescent lights, concrete walls, and employees whispering in corners because someone had already posted online that the bank had frozen the hotel’s accounts.

Vanessa’s public story was moving fast.

A headline appeared before we reached the elevator.

HEIRESS SEIZES FAMILY HOTEL AFTER GALA DISPUTE.

Another:

BENNETT FAMILY FEUD THREATENS 300 JOBS.

No mention of the forged signature.

No mention of forty-two million dollars.

No mention of gunshots.

I showed Miriam.

“She prepared this.”

“Or someone did.”

We took the service elevator to the eleventh floor.

Dad insisted on coming.

So did Ethan.

Daniel came last.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Room 1108 stood at the end of the corridor behind a brass plaque that read PRIVATE.

Dad used his master key.

The electronic lock flashed red.

He tried again.

Red.

I held up the brass key.

“There’s an old lock beneath the panel,” Daniel said.

Dad stared at him.

“How do you know?”

Daniel gave him a tired look.

“Because I helped build the hotel.”

I inserted the key.

It turned.

Inside, the room smelled like dust and old wood.

Mom had decorated it herself.

Cream curtains.

Dark walnut desk.

A faded photograph of the river before the towers came.

Nothing had changed.

I saw her everywhere.

For a moment, the entire night disappeared.

Then Daniel walked to the wardrobe and removed the bottom drawer.

Behind it was a steel panel.

Dad whispered, “Eleanor…”

A second keyhole.

The brass key opened that too.

Inside was a blue file.

Miriam covered her mouth.

Vanessa had been telling the truth.

At least about that.

I removed it.

The first document was a handwritten letter.

Claire,

If you are reading this, something went wrong.

I had to stop.

My knees weakened.

Ethan stood beside me.

“Read it.”

I continued.

Your father loves you. Daniel loves you. Unfortunately, love has never prevented either of them from making terrible decisions.

I almost laughed through the ache in my chest.

That sounded exactly like Mom.

There is something neither man knows.

The original Halcyon partnership had four investors.

I looked up.

Dad frowned.

Daniel’s face emptied.

Four?

I turned the page.

The fourth investor held twenty percent through a silent partnership. I concealed the identity because revealing it would have destroyed two families.

Dad whispered, “Who?”

I read the next line.

Vanessa Rhodes.

The room went still.

Ethan laughed once.

“No.”

He grabbed the letter.

“She would’ve been twenty-three.”

Daniel looked sick.

“She was.”

Dad stared at him.

“You said she worked for you years later.”

“She did.”

Dad shoved him.

“You knew!”

“I knew she invested. I didn’t know Eleanor kept her in the final structure.”

“How could Vanessa have invested in the hotel before Claire was born?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

But I saw it.

Another secret.

Another relationship.

Ethan saw it too.

He stepped back from Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ethan’s voice shook.

“No. No, don’t do that.”

Dad turned slowly.

“What?”

Ethan looked at his mother’s name on the page.

Then at Daniel.

The resemblance wasn’t obvious.

Not until someone forced you to look.

Same gray eyes.

Same narrow jaw.

I felt cold.

Dad whispered, “Daniel?”

Daniel said nothing.

Dad hit him.

Hard.

Daniel fell against the desk.

Ethan shouted.

Miriam screamed.

I grabbed Dad’s arm.

“Stop!”

Dad fought against me.

“You slept with her?”

Daniel wiped blood from his lip.

“Before she ever met you.”

“That’s not what I asked!”

“Richard—”

“Is Ethan your son?”

Nobody breathed.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

And that silence became an answer.

Ethan backed toward the door.

“I’m leaving.”

“Ethan—”

“Don’t touch me.”

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Mom.

Vanessa.

He answered on speaker.

Her voice came through, shaking.

“Ethan, baby, listen to me.”

“Is Daniel my father?”

Silence.

Ethan’s face collapsed.

“Mom.”

A loud noise sounded behind Vanessa.

A door.

Then a man’s voice.

Vanessa whispered quickly:

“Claire has the blue file, doesn’t she?”

I stepped forward.

“Yes.”

“Then get out of Room 1108.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother left more than documents in that safe.”

A faint electronic beep came from behind us.

Once.

Twice.

Daniel’s head snapped toward the steel compartment.

“Everybody out!”

May you like

Vanessa screamed through the phone:

“RUN!”
