Chapter 9 - THE CHOICE THAT SET ME FREE

The court hearings lasted months.
Eleanor pleaded guilty to falsifying records and participating in the cover-up.
Graham faced federal charges.
The Sterling trust was placed under independent supervision.
And I filed for divorce.
Aleric didn't fight me.
That surprised everyone.
He simply signed the papers.
“I don't deserve another chance from you,” he said.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“But I hope someday you'll believe I can become someone better.”
I didn't promise forgiveness.
I didn't need to.
I was finally free.
My pregnancy progressed normally.
I returned to practicing law.
I opened a small legal foundation helping women who had been financially controlled by their spouses.
And Julian stayed safe.
Cassian became part of his life.
Rowan reunited with her son.
Slowly, the impossible family began healing.
One afternoon, Aleric visited my office.
He didn't come alone.
Cassian stood beside him.
“I wanted to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Would you allow Julian to keep seeing you?”
I smiled.
“He's innocent.”
Aleric nodded.
“He loves you.”
That hurt.
Because despite everything, I loved that child too.
I opened my arms.
Julian ran toward me.
His little hands wrapped around my waist.
For a moment, none of the lies mattered.
Only the child did.
Aleric watched quietly.
Then he said:
“I've started therapy.”
I looked at him.
“Good.”
“I also resigned from Sterling Holdings.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Because I don't want to spend the rest of my life protecting a name.”
He looked at Julian.
“I want to protect people.”
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because his words were convincing.
Because his actions had finally started matching them.
Months later, my daughter was born.
A healthy little girl.
I named her Claire.
At the hospital, Aleric stood outside the room.
He didn't enter until I invited him.
When he saw Claire, tears filled his eyes.
“You're going to be a good father,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Maybe.”
Then he smiled.
“Just not your husband.”
May you like
I smiled back.
“That's probably for the best.”
