Chapter 9 - THE LAST CONFESSION

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Mia's eyes filled with tears.
“You're my sister.”
I couldn't process it.
Nathan Cole had been my biological father.
The man whose death started this entire nightmare.
Vanessa knew.
My mother knew.
Charles eventually knew enough to suspect.
And somehow, I had married Vanessa's son.
I looked at Ethan on the monitor.
Cold panic hit me.
Laura's recording continued.
“Ethan is Gregory's biological son. He and Claire share no blood.”
I closed my eyes.
One horror removed.
Ten more remaining.
The countdown flashed.
00:06:31
Outside, Ethan reached the manual cutoff valve.
Wind slammed rain across the camera.
He wrapped both hands around the wheel.
It didn't move.
“It's jammed!” his voice shouted through the radio.
Mia grabbed another channel.
“Turn counterclockwise and pull the release pin underneath.”
Lightning flashed.
Ethan found the pin.
The wheel moved.
Slowly.
Five minutes.
Four.
Then the yacht's lights returned.
Every screen came alive.
Vanessa appeared again.
Blood streaked across her forehead.
Behind her, Laura lay on the floor.
“Mom!” I screamed.
Laura moved.
Alive.
Vanessa looked almost amused.
“You girls finally know.”
Mia stepped toward the monitor.
“You knew Nathan was Claire's father.”
“Yes.”
“And you still planned to kill her?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time, something like pain appeared.
“Nathan was going to leave me for Laura.”
Silence.
There it was.
Not justice.
Not revenge for Nathan.
Jealousy.
Thirty years of murder and betrayal because Vanessa couldn't forgive a man for loving someone else.
“You killed him,” Mia whispered.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Gregory pushed him.”
“Because you told him to.”
Vanessa didn't answer.
Mia began crying.
“All these years you blamed Charles.”
“Charles killed Jonathan. Gregory killed Nathan. Laura stole Nathan from me.”
“And Claire?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“You were proof.”
My stomach twisted.
“Proof of what?”
“That he loved her more.”
Mia closed her eyes.
The countdown reached ninety seconds.
Outside, Ethan screamed as he forced the valve.
Then—
FUEL PURGE CANCELLED
The countdown disappeared.
For the first time all night, I breathed.
Vanessa stared at the control panel.
“No.”
Laura suddenly rose behind her.
She struck Vanessa's wrist.
The gun flew across the floor.
Captain Doyle kicked it away.
Mia immediately unlocked the suite remotely.
We ran.
Through the storm.
Through the corridors.
Toward the control room.
By the time we arrived, Laura had Vanessa pinned against the console.
I stopped at the doorway.
My mother looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
Eight years.
Then she whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
I wanted to hug her.
I wanted to scream at her.
Instead, I said:
“You don't get forgiveness tonight.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Coast Guard.
Mia had transmitted Nathan's archive and our location minutes earlier.
Charles tried to escape through the upper deck.
Harris stopped him.
Gregory was found hiding inside a lifeboat storage compartment.
Captain Doyle had recorded his confession.
Ethan returned soaked, bleeding and barely conscious.
He collapsed in the corridor.
I knelt beside him.
His eyes opened.
“Claire.”
I stared at the man I had married.
“You were going to kill me.”
Tears mixed with rain on his face.
“Yes.”
“Did you ever love me?”
He hesitated.
That hesitation was the only honest thing he had ever given me.
“I think I started to.”
I stood.
“That isn't enough.”
As Coast Guard officers flooded the yacht, my phone vibrated one final time.
UNKNOWN NUMBER:
CHECK YOUR FATHER'S SAFE BEFORE THE FBI DOES.
I stared at the message.
Mia was beside me.
Laura was across the room.
Vanessa was in handcuffs.
May you like
None of them held a phone.
Whoever had been texting me was still unknown.
