Chapter 11 - THE BABY SHE NEVER GOT TO HOLD

Valyrian had never seen Alicia look so frightened.

Not when the doctors discussed her treatment.

Not when Caleum entered her hospital room.

Not even when she told him she was sick.

But now, with a single mention of a baby, her expression seemed to collapse.

"Alicia?"

She looked away.

"Please. Not here."

Valyrian nodded immediately.

He turned toward the officers.

"Get him out."

Caleum was escorted from the room while investigators continued their work.

Dr. Brooks arrived moments later and checked Alicia's condition.

When she was satisfied that her patient was stable, she gave the couple privacy.

Valyrian sat beside the bed.

He didn't demand answers.

He didn't raise his voice.

He simply waited.

Finally, Alicia spoke.

"Last October, I found out I was pregnant."

Valyrian couldn't breathe.

"What?"

She kept her eyes on the blanket.

"It was early. I wanted to tell you after the first appointment."

He remembered October.

Their anniversary.

The weekend he'd canceled because of a business emergency.

Alicia continued.

"I bought a little pair of white baby shoes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wrapped them in a box."

Valyrian stared at her.

He had no memory of the box.

Only endless meetings.

Telephone calls.

Nights spent sleeping in his office.

"I was going to tell you at dinner."

His voice broke.

"Alicia..."

"But you didn't come home."

He closed his eyes.

She continued quietly.

"A few weeks later, I started bleeding. The doctors confirmed that I'd lost the pregnancy."

Valyrian pressed a hand over his mouth.

He had faced violence without flinching.

But nothing had prepared him for learning that his wife had grieved their child alone.

"Why didn't you tell me afterward?"

"I tried."

Again.

Those words.

Alicia reached for the drawer beside her bed.

Inside was a small velvet pouch.

She opened it.

Two tiny white shoes rested inside.

Valyrian began crying.

Silently.

Without trying to hide it.

Alicia placed them in his hands.

"I wanted you to know there was a baby."

He bowed his head.

"I'm so sorry."

She shook her head.

"The doctors told me the loss wasn't something I caused."

"I should have been there."

"Yes," she whispered.

The honesty hurt.

But he accepted it.

He deserved to hear it.

For a long time, they sat together.

Then Alicia spoke again.

"When I received my cancer diagnosis, I was still grieving. I didn't know how to carry both things."

Valyrian looked at her.

"You shouldn't have had to."

She leaned against him.

For the first time in months, she allowed herself to cry without apology.

He held her carefully.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as a powerful man trying to solve a problem.

As a husband who had finally understood the cost of his absence.

After a while, Alicia wiped her cheeks.

"There's something else."

Valyrian brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"What?"

"Victor found out about the pregnancy before I lost it."

Valyrian frowned.

"How?"

"I wrote to him through the nurse. I thought if he was really alive, he deserved to know he might become a grandfather."

Valyrian looked down at the tiny shoes.

"And what did he say?"

Alicia reached into her bag.

She removed another letter.

The handwriting belonged to Victor Darks.

Dear Alicia,

I cannot undo the mistakes I made with my son.

But if there is a child, I want that child to grow up free of the life I built.

I have changed the trust.

Valyrian read the next paragraph.

His expression shifted.

"What does this mean?"

Alicia swallowed.

"Your father transferred control of the legitimate family holdings into a protected trust."

"For whom?"

She looked at him.

"For our child."

Valyrian stared at the letter.

"But the baby..."

"I know."

Her voice trembled.

"After the loss, Victor amended the instructions. The trust would support future children in the family and charitable work chosen by both of us."

Valyrian looked at the date.

It had been signed shortly before Victor disappeared from his last medical facility.

Then he noticed a final handwritten sentence.

If Caleum learns Alicia still holds the authorization, he will do anything to silence her.

Valyrian slowly raised his eyes.

Alicia nodded.

"The document he wants isn't in the hospital."

"Where is it?"

She answered quietly.

May you like

"Inside the baby's memory box."

And that box was still hidden inside the estate Caleum had controlled for years.
