Chapter 5 - PATRICK'S LAST VIDEO

Locker 214 had not been opened in four years.
The storage company required identity verification, legal orders, and enough paperwork to make Andrew impatient.
Julian insisted.
Good.
For once, patience mattered more than fear.
Inside the locker:
One metal document case.
One old laptop.
One hard drive.
One sealed envelope labeled:
SAM.
Samantha’s hands shook when she saw it.
No one opened it for her.
She did.
Patrick’s handwriting.
If you are reading this, something happened before I found the courage to tell you the truth.
Samantha cried before reaching the second line.
I am sorry.
Andrew looked away.
Some grief deserved privacy even in rooms full of lawyers.
Patrick explained the harbor stake.
Thomas Callahan.
Vincent Mercer.
The 37%.
Daniel.
Crane.
Then:
I did not tell you because I thought money would put you and Ivy in danger.
I see now secrecy can do the same thing.
Samantha pressed the letter against her mouth.
Then Patrick wrote:
If anything happens to me, do not trust any offer that begins with protecting Ivy.
That became painfully relevant.
Then they opened the laptop.
Video file.
PATRICK_FINAL_03.
Patrick sat in a parked car.
Night.
Rain on windshield.
He looked exhausted.
“If I don’t make it home…”
Samantha closed her eyes.
He continued.
“Sebastian Crane believes the harbor block belongs to him because his father financed part of Vincent’s original acquisition.”
Andrew looked at Daniel.
“Did he?”
Daniel nodded.
Partially.
Crane money had financed early purchases.
But repayment records showed the debt was settled.
Sebastian disagreed.
Then Patrick said:
“Daniel thinks someone inside the Mercer family is helping Crane.”
Andrew’s jaw tightened.
Who?
Patrick did not know.
Then:
“Ivy’s trust has one additional protection Andrew does not know about.”
Andrew stared.
Of course.
“Beneficiary lineage review.”
Meaning?
If anyone attempted coercive transfer before Ivy turned eighteen, the trust automatically opened an audit of all Mercer and Callahan founder claims.
The kidnapping triggered it.
The forced marriage triggered it.
Crane had activated the very review he wanted to avoid.
Then Patrick said:
“If review opens, find Eleanor Vale.”
Andrew looked at Daniel.
Who?
Daniel frowned.
“Never heard of her.”
Samantha did.
Ashwood.
“She was the night administrator.”
The woman who signed controlled-medication logs.
The person Samantha repeatedly complained to when Daniel was oversedated.
Eleanor always told her:
“Follow physician orders.”
Then Eleanor disappeared the day Samantha was taken.
Caleb located her.
New Jersey.
Living under another name.
Why?
Fear.
She agreed to speak after learning Daniel was alive.
Her first sentence:
“I didn’t drug him.”
Nobody had accused her yet.
That was interesting.
Who did?
Dr. Graham Crane.
Sebastian’s uncle.
Medical director of Ashwood.
Again.
Family.
Then Eleanor revealed something else.
She was not merely administrator.
She had once worked for Vincent Mercer.
As bookkeeper.
Thirty years earlier.
She knew Thomas Callahan.
Knew Patrick.
Knew the harbor ledger.
“How did Daniel end up at Ashwood?”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“Andrew’s mother brought him.”
Andrew stopped breathing.
Their mother, Lucia Mercer.
Dead six years earlier.
The woman who identified Daniel’s supposed body.
The woman who watched Andrew bury an empty casket.
“She knew Daniel was alive?”
“Yes.”
All nine years.
Andrew’s face became unreadable.
Daniel closed his eyes.
He already knew.
Of course.
“Why?”
Eleanor explained.
Lucia believed Sebastian Crane would kill Daniel if he remained visible.
So she arranged a false death identity.
Placed Daniel in Ashwood under another name.
Initially for six months.
Long enough for the harbor fight to cool.
Then?
Crane found him anyway.
Instead of killing him, they kept him sedated because he remained useful.
Lucia lost control of the arrangement.
Why not tell Andrew?
Because she feared Andrew would start a war and expose Daniel.
Maybe she was right.
Maybe not.
Again, protection through deception.
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“My entire family apparently thought I was too dangerous to tell the truth.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Were they wrong?”
Andrew did not answer.
Then Eleanor said:
“Lucia left something for Ivy.”
Everyone froze.
“She never met Ivy.”
“No.”
“But she knew Patrick’s trust would eventually pass to a child.”
Lucia wrote a contingency letter before her death.
Stored with Eleanor.
Addressed:
TO THE CALLAHAN CHILD.
Ivy.
Inside:
If you are reading this, the Mercers failed to fix their own mess before it reached you.
Andrew almost laughed.
It sounded exactly like his mother.
Then:
Your father’s share is real.
But there is another child with a claim to the harbor.
Samantha stared.
Another child?
Whose?
Lucia wrote:
Before Thomas Callahan died, he had two sons.
Patrick was the younger.
The older son was never acknowledged.
If he or his descendants appear, Ivy does not own the full Callahan block.
Andrew looked at Daniel.
“Name?”
Daniel shook his head.
The letter had it.
MICHAEL REED.
Age today:
Approximately forty-eight.
Last known location:
Brooklyn.
Andrew knew the name.
May you like
Everyone did.
Michael Reed was Sebastian Crane’s chief financial officer.
