Chapter 10 - Healing the Broken Sanctuary

Six months passed.

The Aspen mansion had undergone a complete transformation.

I hired a team of master architects and interior designers to strip away every piece of furniture, every painting, and every decoration that carried the memory of Vanessa's presence. The dark, cold west wing was opened up with massive floor-to-ceiling skylights, filling the house with brilliant mountain sunlight.

The family dining room where I had found my daughters eating moldy bread was completely torn down. In its place, we constructed a sun-drenched conservatory and breakfast room filled with warm cedar tables, fresh blooming flowers, and comfortable plush armchairs.

On a warm summer morning, the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and hot blueberry pancakes filled the house.

Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace sat around the low wooden table in the conservatory, dressed in bright, colorful summer dresses, laughing happily as they poured maple syrup over their pancakes.

Their cheeks were rosy, their weight was fully restored, and their eyes sparkled with the pure, unburdened joy of childhood.

I walked into the room carrying a tray of fresh orange juice, sitting down at the center of the table beside them.

"Daddy! Look!" Lily cheered, holding up a drawing she had made with watercolor paints.

The painting showed our house surrounded by green trees, a bright yellow sun, and five figures standing hand-in-hand: me, the four girls, and an angel in the sky with golden wings representing their mother, Claire.

"It's the most beautiful painting I've ever seen, Lily," I whispered, holding the paper carefully, tears of deep joy welling in my eyes.

"We're never going to be cold again, right, Daddy?" Sophie asked, reaching her small hand out to touch my arm.

I pulled all four of my daughters into a massive, warm group hug, holding them tight against my heart.

"Never again, my sweet angels," I promised, kissing each of their foreheads. "This house is yours. This love is yours. And nothing in this world will ever tear us apart again."
