Chapter 7 - THE YACHT CAME BACK WITHOUT GRANT

At 9:12 p.m., The Sovereign returned to the marina.

Grant was not on it.

Neither was Miranda.

The Coast Guard transfer boat had been intercepted by harbor police because investigators wanted both of them questioned before they could reach the hospital.

For once, I was grateful.

I did not want Grant near Chloe until I knew exactly what part of this belonged to him.

Miranda surrendered her phone voluntarily.

Grant did too.

Their messages confirmed the affair.

Every hotel.

Every lie.

Every excuse.

Nothing was hidden.

It hurt.

But it also proved something else.

Grant had begun investigating Stephen three months earlier.

Quietly.

Badly.

He did not tell me because he believed if Stephen knew I was aware, Chloe and I might become targets.

The irony was unbearable.

His secrecy did not protect us.

It isolated us.

Exactly what Stephen needed.

Then investigators found a message Grant sent Miranda two days before Christmas.

G:

After tomorrow, this ends. I’m telling Evelyn everything.

M:

Everything?

G:

The theft. Us. All of it.

He had planned to confess.

Christmas morning.

After using my yacht for one last secret meeting.

How generous.

I felt no relief.

Then another message:

G:

If Stephen moved the money through my name, Evelyn will think I betrayed her financially too.

M:

You betrayed her in the way that matters.

Grant:

I know.

That line hurt differently.

He knew.

He simply had not stopped soon enough.

At 10:30, Chloe began breathing without the ventilator.

I held her hand as they removed the tube.

Her eyes opened slowly.

“Mom?”

I cried instantly.

“I’m here.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Dad?”

I froze.

“He’s coming.”

Not a promise.

A fact.

She closed her eyes again.

Then whispered:

“Grandma said Dad checked the sauce.”

“I know.”

“I thought…”

“It’s not your fault.”

That sentence I meant.

A nurse entered with a recovered item from Chloe’s clothing.

A small silver pendant.

I recognized it.

Grant gave it to Chloe on her tenth birthday.

Inside was a tiny GPS chip because he was terrified of kidnapping.

The tracker had been offline for months.

Daniel checked the log.

It had reactivated that morning.

At 10:48.

Five minutes before Margaret entered the kitchen.

The activation came from Stephen’s computer.

Why?

Because he wanted proof Chloe was physically at home before the exposure.

But the tracking data showed something else.

At 10:36, another registered Vance tracker was already inside the house.

One assigned to Grant’s old security bag.

Grant had left at 10:51.

Meaning someone else carrying his security equipment had been inside before Chloe came downstairs.

The deleted footage restoration expanded.

At 10:31, a second person entered through the garage.

Stephen Vale himself.

May you like

He was in my house for nineteen minutes.

And whatever he did during those nineteen minutes had not yet been found.
