Chapter 8 - THE QUESTION I DIDN'T WANT TO ASK

I hated myself for asking the doctor.

“Could Lily’s reaction have been deliberately caused?”

The physician looked startled.

“Why are you asking?”

I told him only what mattered.

Food containing her allergen had been left in the kitchen.

Her medication had been removed.

People around us had financial motives involving my daughter’s future assets.

He answered carefully.

“The reaction is consistent with exposure. I cannot tell you someone intentionally caused it.”

Fair.

I did not want paranoia to become evidence.

We preserved facts.

Food container.

Receipts.

Lily’s recording.

Rosa’s timeline.

Security footage.

Then the footage gave us something.

At 10:43 a.m., Jessica entered the house carrying two bags.

At 11:19, Grant left with Jessica.

At 11:26, Lily entered the kitchen.

At 11:31, she ran upstairs.

At 11:39, she called Rosa.

Nothing showed Jessica feeding Lily.

No intentional poisoning.

What it did show was reckless selfishness.

The kitchen camera also captured Grant moving Lily’s emergency medication from her backpack onto a side counter.

He did it because the backpack was sitting near Jessica’s luggage and he wanted it moved.

Then they left without replacing it.

No murder plot.

No calculated attack.

Just negligence.

That truth was almost harder.

My daughter nearly died because two adults were too self-absorbed to think.

Then security footage showed something else.

Jessica entered my office before leaving.

She carried the board folder out.

Exactly as Lily said.

Grant saw her.

“You knew?”

He shook his head.

“I thought it was yacht paperwork.”

“You watched her leave my office carrying a folder.”

“She said you approved it.”

“And you believed her?”

His face collapsed.

“No. I wanted to.”

At least he finally understood.

Jessica became the next priority.

My attorneys contacted her.

She refused to speak.

Then she posted publicly that I was a “jealous wife weaponizing money.”

Bad move.

Not because I cared about gossip.

Because one of Mercer Capital’s investors saw the post and recognized her.

He called me.

“I know Jessica Vale.”

“How?”

“She used to work for Northbridge.”

My heartbeat changed.

“What did she do?”

“Corporate intelligence.”

Not glamorous espionage.

Research.

Executive relationships.

Competitor mapping.

Finding pressure points before deals.

Jessica had not met Grant randomly.

She had been placed near him.

Northbridge identified my husband as a vulnerability.

Then she became his mistress.

Maybe that was planned.

Maybe it became personal.

Either way, she had access.

To my house.

My yacht.

My husband.

My office.

My daughter.

I felt sick.

Then Peter Sloan resigned from Northbridge.

Abruptly.

Claire forwarded his resignation message.

One line stood out:

I will not participate in further conduct involving the Mercer family.

Further conduct.

Not acquisition.

Family.

I called him personally.

He refused at first.

Then I said:

“My daughter almost died.”

Silence.

“I had nothing to do with that.”

“Then help me understand what you did have something to do with.”

He agreed to meet counsel.

What he told us changed the entire picture.

Northbridge wanted Mercer Capital.

Yes.

Scott wanted money.

Yes.

Jessica was recruited to build access.

Yes.

But Grant’s affair had not been part of the original strategy.

Jessica crossed that line herself.

Then Scott saw an opportunity.

He encouraged Grant to think divorce.

The Miami house.

The fake thirty-percent entitlement.

The forged sale emails.

All designed to destabilize our marriage and create a shareholder dispute.

“But Lily?” I asked.

Peter looked horrified.

“Lily was supposed to be completely off limits.”

That phrase chilled me.

“Supposed to?”

Peter nodded.

Northbridge’s internal project had a code name.

MERCURY.

Its written rules specifically prohibited any contact involving my child.

“Who wrote those rules?”

“The chairman.”

“Name.”

Peter hesitated.

“Arthur Vale.”

Jessica’s father.

The chairman of Northbridge Equity.

Her affair with Grant wasn’t only connected to the firm.

May you like

The woman on my yacht was the chairman’s daughter.

And apparently her own father had ordered her to stay away from Lily.
