Chapter 8 - The Federal Raid
Three weeks after the arrests, state and federal authorities expanded their investigation into the broader financial syndicate that had supplied Daniel with his illegal loan structures.
The private equity firm Blackwood Capital—the predatory lender whose default notice had fallen from Daniel's briefcase on that fateful evening—was raided at dawn by fifty armed agents from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.
The firm's managing partners were arrested for operating an illegal racketeering enterprise, money laundering, and conspiring with corporate executives to stage fraudulent bankruptcy schemes.
During the search of Blackwood Capital’s servers, federal investigators uncovered an encrypted messaging thread between Daniel Vance and the firm's chief loan officer, dated two weeks before my eviction.
In one text message, Daniel wrote:
"Once Emily is out of the house and the default notice is processed in her name, she won't have the legal standing or the financial means to hire a lawyer. She'll accept whatever settlement I give her."
The loan officer replied:
"Just make sure she doesn't check the land registry before you serve the divorce papers."
When Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins presented these messages to the court during a preliminary evidentiary hearing, the defense team collapsed entirely.
Vanessa Reed’s court-appointed attorney immediately filed a motion to sever her case from Daniel’s, offering full state testimony against him in exchange for a reduced sentence on the corporate fraud charges.
She admitted under oath that Daniel had planned the entire scheme, that she had knowingly worn my jewelry to provoke me into leaving the house voluntarily, and that Daniel had personally ordered the Thallium sulphate through an illegal online dark-web vendor.
Inside the holding cell at the county jail, Daniel was left completely alone.
