Chapter 11 - VITTORIO'S SECRET SON

Vittorio had a child.
At sixty-two.
Mother:
Mara Bell.
Twenty-eight.
Former assistant in Costa Foundation accounting.
She had disappeared from work eight months earlier.
Vittorio hid the pregnancy.
Why?
Because his own biological son could create an alternative claim under parts of the Costa family structure.
If Gabriel’s children were disqualified, Vittorio’s child became successor beneficiary.
The fake test was designed to challenge Luca’s paternity.
Then potentially Lucia’s too.
Create chaos.
Delay registration.
Use his own son as leverage.
Where was Mara?
Found in a private apartment owned by one of Vittorio’s shell companies.
Alive.
Terrified.
With newborn boy Nicholas.
She had not been free to leave for months.
Vittorio called it protection.
Mara called it captivity.
She cooperated immediately.
She had overheard plans involving Norah.
Vittorio intended to seize the twins after birth, switch Luca’s genetic sample with Nicholas’s, then later present “proof” Gabriel’s son wasn’t his.
Why keep Norah alive?
To accuse her of infidelity publicly.
Destroy Gabriel emotionally.
Break the marriage.
Then offer guardianship “support.”
Control everyone.
Vittorio had spent his entire life creating dependency.
Gabriel realized his empire functioned exactly the same way.
Fear people.
Isolate them.
Then become the only person who could solve the danger.
He looked sick.
Norah saw the recognition.
Did not comfort him.
But respected it.
Then Mara revealed something about Bianca.
Bianca was Vittorio’s niece through an unacknowledged daughter.
Family again.
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
Of course.
Vittorio planted her near him years earlier.
Not specifically as mistress.
As access.
Then Gabriel made every poor decision necessary to turn access into betrayal on his own.
Important distinction.
No one forced the affair.
Then federal investigators charged Vittorio across multiple crimes.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Trafficking.
Murder-linked offenses reopened.
Gabriel also entered a negotiated cooperation agreement.
He was not walking away clean.
Money laundering.
Narcotics conspiracy.
Bribery.
Potential sentencing.
Norah learned from his attorney.
“How much time?”
“Could be years.”
Gabriel looked at the twins.
“I know.”
“And you’re still doing it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mateo is nine.”
He swallowed.
“Luca and Lucia are days old.”
Then:
“I’ve spent my whole adult life believing consequences were for people without power.”
He looked at Norah.
“I was wrong.”
That mattered more than an apology.
Then Norah asked the question neither had touched.
“What about us?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“There is no us unless you decide there is after all this.”
Correct.
Then his attorney entered with another surprise.
Vittorio had named a co-conspirator in exchange for leverage.
Not Bianca.
Not Harris.
Not another Costa captain.
Elena Cruz.
Mateo’s biological mother.
May you like
Gabriel’s former girlfriend had known her son lived for years.
And she had never told Gabriel.
