Chapter 14 - THE SECRET RECORDED IN THE DARK

Anthony Romano believed he had won.
Victor had surrendered his weapon.
The inheritance documents lay open.
Nora and her father stood surrounded by armed guards.
But Anthony hadn't noticed the tiny indicator blinking on the security camera.
Adrian had activated the building's emergency surveillance backup.
Every word was being preserved.
Victor looked at the documents.
“Before I sign, I want to hear you admit what you did.”
Anthony smiled.
“Still pretending morality matters?”
“Did you order Evelyn Hastings killed?”
Anthony leaned back.
“She was going to expose the foundation.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“Yes, Victor. I ordered it.”
Nora closed her eyes.
For eighteen years, she'd imagined her mother's death as a terrible accident.
Now the man responsible was speaking as though he'd approved an ordinary business expense.
Victor's voice remained steady.
“And Adrian?”
Anthony glanced toward his younger son.
“He was becoming inconvenient.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“You tried to kill me because I overheard you discussing Evelyn?”
“Because you were weak.”
Thomas Hastings suddenly spoke.
“Evelyn saved your son, Anthony. She saved your family from a monster.”
Anthony turned sharply.
“Silence.”
Victor lifted his head.
“One more question. Who ordered Nora's father removed from the hospital?”
Anthony smiled.
“I did.”
“And Senator Davenport?”
“He financed the operation. Matteo handled the logistics. Camilla helped keep the girl distracted.”
Nora stared.
The entire conspiracy was finally exposed.
Then Adrian pressed the emergency release.
The corridor doors unlocked.
The lights went out.
Leo moved.
A guard rushed him, but Leo disarmed the man and forced him to the ground.
Victor grabbed Anthony's wrist as the older man raised his weapon.
The pistol struck the concrete.
Anthony lunged again.
Victor blocked the attack, drove him backward, and pinned him against the wall.
“It's over.”
Anthony struggled.
“You'll destroy everything!”
Victor looked directly into his father's eyes.
“No. I'm ending what you destroyed.”
Sirens rose outside.
Rebecca had arranged for federal investigators and local officers to respond once the recording was secured and the hostages could be reached.
Adrian opened the storage-room door.
Thomas collapsed into Nora's arms.
“Dad!”
“I'm all right,” he whispered.
Nora held him tightly.
Victor approached.
“Are you both safe?”
Nora looked at him through tears.
“Yes.”
For one fragile moment, the nightmare seemed finished.
Anthony was taken into custody.
His guards surrendered.
The recordings were secured.
Adrian agreed to cooperate with investigators.
But as Nora walked toward the waiting ambulance, Rebecca approached Victor with a sealed document recovered from Anthony's belongings.
“There's something you need to see.”
Victor opened it.
Inside was the original trust agreement.
A clause had been concealed beneath an attached amendment.
Rebecca pointed to the final paragraph.
“Victor, the inheritance wasn't the only thing Evelyn arranged.”
He read the words slowly.
Then he looked toward Nora.
“What is it?” she asked.
Victor's eyes softened.
“It says your mother established a separate fund for your future.”
Nora frowned.
“Why?”
Rebecca smiled faintly.
“Because Evelyn believed that someday you might meet the Romano family again.”
Nora stared.
Victor turned the page.
At the bottom was a handwritten letter addressed to him.
VICTOR, IF YOU EVER MEET MY DAUGHTER, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT A GOOD MAN IS NOT DEFINED BY THE FAMILY HE WAS BORN INTO, BUT BY THE PEOPLE HE CHOOSES TO PROTECT.
May you like
Victor lowered the paper.
And for the first time since Nora had met him, the feared mafia boss began to cry.
