Chapter 1 - THE MARK BENEATH THE RING

Elsie did not look at Marissa’s face.

She looked at the pale band around her finger.

Four weeks.

Maybe five.

Long enough for sunlight to leave its evidence.

Long enough for the lie about Adrien “having it resized” to become insulting.

Walter shifted in his chair.

“Elsie, don’t start.”

That was the sentence that changed something inside her.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was prepared.

Nobody had asked what she had seen outside the bridal suite.

Nobody had asked why she walked away from a man she had planned to marry.

But the moment she mentioned Diane Parker’s ring, everyone knew exactly what argument came next.

Elsie picked up her keys.

“How long?”

Marissa blinked.

“What?”

“How long have you been wearing Mom’s ring?”

“I haven’t.”

Elsie looked at the mark.

Marissa covered her hand.

Too late.

Walter stood.

“Enough.”

“No. I want the truth.”

“You abandoned two hundred people at a wedding.”

“I saw my fiancé kissing my sister.”

The kitchen went silent.

For the first time, Elsie said it aloud.

Walter’s expression did not change.

That hurt more than shock would have.

Marissa lowered her eyes.

“I was going to tell you.”

Elsie stared at her.

“When?”

“After the wedding.”

A strange laugh escaped Elsie.

“After my wedding?”

Marissa’s tears appeared almost immediately.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

Walter stepped between them.

“Adrien has helped this family more than you know.”

There it was.

Not denial.

Not outrage.

A defense.

Elsie felt suddenly cold.

“How much?”

Walter’s face tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

“How much money did Adrien give you?”

Nobody answered.

Elsie remembered her mother.

Everybody talks.

The trick is being the one who wrote it down.

So Elsie stopped talking.

She waited.

Walter looked away first.

That was enough.

Then Marissa’s phone lit up on the kitchen counter.

A message appeared before she could grab it.

ADRIEN:

Did she ask about the notebook?

Elsie’s heartbeat stopped.

Marissa snatched up the phone.

But Elsie had already read it.

Not the ring.

Not the wedding.

The notebook.

Her notebook.

The same handwritten pages Roman had shown her that morning.

Elsie stepped backward.

“What notebook?”

Marissa went pale.

Walter whispered, “Marissa.”

It sounded like a warning.

Elsie finally understood something far worse than infidelity had been happening beneath her own roof.

Adrien had not started asking questions about Bellamy Holdings eleven months ago by accident.

Someone inside Elsie’s family had been helping him choose every question.

And judging by the terror on Marissa’s face, that person had been her sister.
