Chapter 1 - THE JET SHE NEVER BOOKED

Emma stared at the message.

Mrs. Weston, your jet is ready. Private terminal, Gate 4. Everything you need is waiting.

Her first thought was Andrew.

A trap.

A joke.

Another way to remind her that even leaving him required his permission.

“Ma’am?”

The driver glanced at her through the mirror.

Emma looked at the rain.

“Take me to the private terminal.”

Twenty-three minutes later, she stood beneath the awning of a small aviation building at Teterboro Airport, one hand under her belly and the other gripping her clutch.

A silver Gulfstream waited beyond the glass.

No Weston logo.

No Andrew.

A woman in a navy suit approached.

“Emma Bennett?”

Emma froze.

Nobody had called her Bennett in three years.

“That was my maiden name.”

The woman smiled gently.

“My name is Rachel Sloan. I’m legal counsel for the Bennett Family Trust.”

Emma stared.

“My family doesn’t have a trust.”

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Yes, it does.”

Before Emma could ask another question, Rachel handed her an envelope.

Her father’s handwriting was on the front.

EMMA—OPEN ONLY IF YOU DECIDE TO LEAVE HIM.

Her knees nearly gave out.

“My father wrote this?”

“Six months ago.”

“He never said anything.”

“He wasn’t allowed to.”

Emma looked up sharply.

“Allowed by who?”

“By the terms of your grandfather’s estate.”

The rain struck the terminal windows harder.

Emma opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

Sweetheart, if you are reading this, then you finally chose yourself.

Her eyes filled.

Do not come home to Pennsylvania yet.

She frowned.

Andrew has people watching the farm.

Her blood turned cold.

Why would Andrew watch her parents?

Then:

Take the plane. Go where Rachel tells you. Trust no Weston employee, no Weston attorney, and no document Andrew asks you to sign regarding the baby.

Emma stopped breathing.

The baby.

She looked at Rachel.

“What document?”

Rachel’s face became grim.

“We believe Andrew intended to have you sign one after the charity ball.”

“What kind?”

“A postnuptial amendment.”

Emma’s fingers tightened.

“Why?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Because your unborn child controls something Andrew needs.”

Emma laughed once in disbelief.

“My baby controls nothing.”

Rachel opened a leather portfolio.

Inside was a corporate chart.

Weston Capital.

Andrew’s company.

Emma recognized it immediately.

Then Rachel pointed to a block of shares.

Twenty-four percent.

Held by:

THE BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY: EMMA BENNETT WESTON AND ISSUE.

Emma stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“It isn’t.”

“My family owns part of Andrew’s company?”

“Your grandfather financed Andrew’s first acquisition before you two married.”

Emma’s heart hammered.

Andrew had always said he built everything himself.

Rachel continued.

“The shares were structured so Andrew could vote them while you remained married.”

“And after divorce?”

“They return to your independent control.”

Emma’s blood went cold.

“So if I leave him…”

“You become his largest individual outside shareholder.”

The entire night changed.

Andrew kissing Lila.

The cameras.

The humiliation.

His complete lack of apology.

Emma whispered:

“He wanted me to leave.”

Rachel nodded.

“Not exactly.”

“What does that mean?”

“He wanted you emotional enough to sign before you left.”

Emma looked at the jet.

“Sign what?”

Rachel handed her the draft amendment.

One clause was highlighted.

Upon execution, Emma waived voting rights permanently.

Another:

Any shares passing to her child would be administered by the child’s father.

Andrew.

Emma felt nauseated.

Then Rachel said:

“There’s one more reason you cannot go to your parents.”

“What?”

“Someone entered their farmhouse three nights ago.”

Emma went pale.

“Were they hurt?”

“No.”

“What did they take?”

Rachel met her eyes.

“Nothing.”

Then quietly:

“They left something.”
